Title: Tires
Post by: xterra06 on June 04, 2013, 09:00:50 AM
So i am trying to do as much research on tires i can before i purchase. I have it narrowed down to Toyo Open Country ATII or Nitto Terra Grapplers or Falken Wild Peak... but now my size problem.

I cant figure if i want to go with 265-70-17 or 285-70-17... im not sure if i have to do the melt mod on the 265 but i know i will on the 285.

So my next question is can anyone help me with that... i have a heat gun but im just not 100% on what needs to be done... the thread about it isnt very clear to me and so idk if i just need to get the tires and just go out with the heat gun and just keep melting the plastic till it fits...

Please let me know what you think... thanks.

Melt the plastic back inside the wheel wells that's right by the rocker panel.

It sticks out a bit and needs to be heated up and pushed back.

The fender liners don't help water from getting to particular ??? components like the alternator?

lol or at least rain enough to really harm any components...  Plus those are built to withstand some water... even with the fender liners everything under the hood still gets wet, between coming through the radiator and undercarriage and hood cracks... its going to get wet anyways... not like im driving through rivers...

You would be amazed how much water our detailers spray on an engine. And that's with a pressure washer. A little rain is nothing.

With 285 I would suggest doing prior to tire install.  I waited until after....well lets just say it was VERY clear what needed to be melted back!  HA.....I put on Kelly TSR Safari's and love them so far.  My buddy (although a 4runner guy) went from the Nitto's to the Toyo's and likes the ride and sound much better.
