Title: Arizona Traverse
Post by: AZXterra410 on September 23, 2013, 02:28:44 PM
I thought I had posted this a while back, but could not find it so here is an update.

I have wanted to run the AZ traverse since I first picked up my Xterra almost 2 years ago now. For those unfamiliar, the AZ traverse is a route that runs from Ajo, AZ through the Camino del Diablo to Yuma, then through Wickenburg, Crown King, Prescott, Jerome, Williams and ending at the Grand Canyon. From border to the Grand Canyon, almost exclusivly on dirt.

Well this past weekend I was home with my wife and son and between yard work and playing Grand Theft Auto 5, I had my Arizona Gazetter and my tablet with Topo maps on them out, and I plotted the entire course using trip reports from several guys from Expeditionportal.com. So I have the course set on paper, now starts the execution of my well laid plans.

Considering my lack of knowledge with 80% of the route my plan is to pre-run sections of the trail on weekends that I have 2 days off. Specifically the Yuma-Wickenburg stretch and the Prescott-Jerome stretch, the rest of the trail I have been on or am familiar with the areas enough that I am not worried about it. The only other variable is the Camino Del Diablo. I am 50-50 on running that initial portion of the trail, I am not keen on it for whatever reason, rational or not, so I may decide to forgo that stretch and just do Yuma to the Grand Canyon. I plan on doing the seconds in chunks over the winter and putting them all together sometime this spring as one 6-7 day trip. I am posting this because any of you are of course welcome to join me on any leg of the journey! I have yet to decide when I will start, but I will post again when I have a free weekend and want to hit up one of the sections to see if anybody wants to join me.

Nice start. This is much like the AZRUN that SWANKy hosts annualy. Expedition travel w/ obstacles (optional, mostly ;)), and yeah, CDD has been kicked around for 10+ years in local circles, and I've yet to hear of anyone having done so.. Point I'm getting to is, don't miss out on NW AZ. There's some great trails and scenery to be had. The " http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Maria_River_(Arizona) ", IIRC was a fun day or two coming from Kingman, down to Baghdad, Yarnell, and Congress, then into the Hassayampa and eventually Wickenburg. It'd make an execellent route South to Northwest also IMO. Also, try and make the North Rim part of the itinerary. Much less traffic, more wildlife, and scenery is as good or better than the Southern. Then, you can hook around to the Vermillion Cliffs and.. Or Whatever. I could write another paragraph on where to wheel. Ours is an amazing state..

If I can swing it, I'm in. For either all of it or at least a part. I've been wanting to run this trail, too.

DBAX, I would love to sit down over a beer with you and talk about northern AZ stuff, go over some good places to visit. I am not familiar with that part of the state but spending a few days north of the grand canyon is on my to do list. I think I am going to wait and dedicate a chunk of time to that area specifically next fall.

Nothing solid yet... waiting for a free weekend basically... I have work every other weekend and it seems like wedding season because I have plans for the next few weekends I dont work. October is completely booked. I am thinking maybe Thanksgiving weekend or something to go out and hit one of the segments. I will post up as soon as I know.

The main goal, if I didn't already post, is to get all the sections pre-run by spring then do the full stretch in March or April.

I'd be down to go with for some or all of it. Depending on when it is...

This sounds awesome! Definitely keep posting as you get info. I'm more interested in the full run next year in March/April time. It would depend on where in the country I am as I'm a travel nurse and change locations every 3 months but would love to make it work out. Something a 2wd could handle? I'm looking to trade up next yr but don't know when. Sounds like a week long trail and camping excursion if I've read this correctly? Would be sweet if a half dozen or SK of us could get together and make the run. Keep the posts coming!

I am hoping to do the Yuma to Wickenberg run in December sometime. Been so busy with the newborn and work I just havent had a free weekend to start.

IRT your question about if a 2wd could do it, I am not sure honestly, but I doubt it. Only because of the section between Prescott and Jermone incorporates the Smiley Rock trail which is supposed to be a little hairy.
