Title: AGM Battery?
Post by: sunny1881 on September 24, 2013, 07:22:46 PM
So my battery took a crap yesterday, what is the best LOW budget AGM battery you all are running and where did you get it?

Preferably Marine?

I don't know about low budget but I got an Optima on Amazon for fairly cheap. Had zero issues with it.

Hm... I have heard multiple sides to the Optima issue...mine is a red top, is 2 years old, and still starts like a champ...

I have a red top in my '66 mustang for 6 years now. Starts every time. I do keep a battrty maintainer/charger on it though since I only start it once a month.

I haven't had any issues with any of my Optima Red Tops, and one of them is about 5 years old. They're pricey, but imo they're worth it especially in a vehicle that sits for a while between uses. Not to mention if you make friends with someone who works at Batteries Plus they can cut you a decent deal.

I ended getting the DieHard Platinum Marine because in my fronty I have a lot of accessories attached to the battery (winch, fuse panel, etc...) and the extra posts are perfect for that. Hopefully its worth the money, this is my first AGM battery, only time will tell.

Make sure the front posts are designed for that kind of load.  Often the front posts use smaller gauge connections that can burn up under heavy load like a winch.

The marine batteries come with regular top posts and then also accessory top posts not side..., smaller gauge but the battery in there now lasted 5+ years with winch hooked to accessory post, so I assume they can handle the load. Although from what I understand the winch was only used a few times.
