Title: Oct 6th Tuscon run
Post by: WHPIVxterra on October 06, 2013, 08:18:35 PM
some shots of the run today in no real order.  Some mine shafts, bats, ridges, one spot that we had to swallow our pride and back down the trail because we couldn't make it further.  Wicked fun day!

Finally getting my pics up, It was such an awesome day!

Like many stories, this one started with a hole.

The hole turned out to be a mine, and I ended up taking a bunch of pictures that were nothing but black because my flash was off.

I finally turned my flash on in time to catch this little guy catching a few Zs
(http://streetquest.net/photos/azxc/X131006-03.jpg)

Since we stumbled on a few mines which were some of the deepest surviving mines I'd ever seen we decided to explore through them some.

It wasn't just one mine, we actually got to drive to about three of them
(http://streetquest.net/photos/azxc/X131006-06.jpg)

Still had to find time to pose a bit though
(http://streetquest.net/photos/azxc/X131006-07.jpg)

We think this was some kind of loading structure at one time
(http://streetquest.net/photos/azxc/X131006-08.jpg)

It's mostly collapsed now, but you could kind of see how a wagon might have pulled up to it and had rocks dumped into it.

Here was the entrance to mine number 2
(http://streetquest.net/photos/azxc/X131006-10.jpg)

This one had a lot of interestingly colored rocks
(http://streetquest.net/photos/azxc/X131006-11.jpg)

Don't know what this bar was used for, but it's wedged between two walls in one of the shafts
(http://streetquest.net/photos/azxc/X131006-13.jpg)

My dad loved the calcium deposits, you could tell water managed to find ways through the miniscule cracks in the rocks to leave mineral trails on the walls
(http://streetquest.net/photos/azxc/X131006-15.jpg)

From the pictures the place seems all nice and bright, but really that was only where the flash of the camera and the flashlights were hitting. Everything else was pitch dark
(http://streetquest.net/photos/azxc/X131006-18.jpg)

Finally we had enough of one mine
(http://streetquest.net/photos/azxc/X131006-19.jpg)

And climbed down into the next
(http://streetquest.net/photos/azxc/X131006-20.jpg)

This one was actually a little steep to get into
(http://streetquest.net/photos/azxc/X131006-21.jpg)

We noticed this one had kind of a picturesque frame in the entrance
(http://streetquest.net/photos/azxc/X131006-22.jpg)

So a pose for the couple seemed in order
(http://streetquest.net/photos/azxc/X131006-23.jpg)

With the naked eye the air in the tunnel seemed perfectly clear
(http://streetquest.net/photos/azxc/X131006-24.jpg)

But you could tell from the pictures that there were hundreds of tiny mite like bugs flying around, close enough for the camera to pick up but too small to sense any other way
(http://streetquest.net/photos/azxc/X131006-25.jpg)

This little pond in the mine was cool. Water had been building up here for who knows how long, and on the time there was this layer of grime and dust
(http://streetquest.net/photos/azxc/X131006-26.jpg)

My pictures came out terrible but after throwing a few rocks into the water to clear out the surface the water underneath that was amazing clear, you could see to the bottom easily.

We found a different exit than we entered this mine through, and then realized there was this huge rock over our head that was basically being supported by a mostly dead tree
(http://streetquest.net/photos/azxc/X131006-29.jpg)

The mines definitely stole the spotlight of the show. They were awesome.

We continued towards Rice Peak
(http://streetquest.net/photos/azxc/X131006-31.jpg)

Found a watering hole where a cow was drinking, but ran off before I got my camera out
(http://streetquest.net/photos/azxc/X131006-32.jpg)

And then began the climb
(http://streetquest.net/photos/azxc/X131006-33.jpg)

We made it pretty far, but once we reached the point where the slope was steep and the rocks were getting larger I didn't have good enough grip on my tires to climb over them. The whole truck just started sliding sideways with all four tires spinning rather than climb over them. Probably could have aired the tires down and put someone up as a dedicated spotter, but as it was only the two trucks on the trip...

...the safer bet was to back off the trail...

...keep backing up...

...and turned around
(http://streetquest.net/photos/azxc/X131006-40.jpg)

So headed back around to the other trails around Rice Peak
(http://streetquest.net/photos/azxc/X131006-41.jpg)

Found a shady spot and had some Cheetos
(http://streetquest.net/photos/azxc/X131006-42.jpg)

Hopefully next time we can find a good place to shoot some rounds too.

It was an amazing time. Only real shame was that more people weren't there to share in it. We definitely need a bigger convoy next time ;D

Ya I had it planed but the wife had other plans for me. So to answer your questions before you ask " yes I lost my nuts at the altar". looks like a great time wish I made it.

You will need to let me know in advance next time you do this so we can schedule it when I can get a day off.  This looks like a tun of fun!

I'll try to make some time for another run up there.  It's really worth the trip al the way to the top for the view!
