Title: Trail map
Post by: Hammer (Avi) on October 29, 2013, 06:35:40 PM
I received a suggestion today to start a map with pins to all the known trail heads.  Similar to the "pin yourself" section.  What do you guys think of this idea?

I think its a great idea. It would have to be regulated though. Meaning not just any dirt road is a trail.

I agree with Kyle, as long as we are only pinning signed/marked trails (aka official trails), this sounds like a good idea.

You will notice that I pinned myself to the Table Mesa area.

I agree, good idea, maybe also pin meetup spots like Chevron off I-17/Carefree Highway. Gas station across from Ft McDowell Casino in the East Valley, etc...

I was screwing around the other day with this website. (im sure there are other sites out there, this was just the first one I came across)
https://www.zeemaps.com/map?group=720261&location=Arizona&add=1
You could use different colors for different things.. .   Example...  One color for each trail raiting, one color for popular meet up places, another color for actual meet places.  ect

A while back, I was researching some trails in Nevada. I came across a website that uses Google Earth.  I think they uploaded actual GPS Coordinates from their trips.

Nice, I am sure there is a way to integrate that.  Rev should be dropping by the mod day, we will talk about it then.

Rehash an old topic.
Questions
Should we look into creating a trail map?
When you guys/girls go off-roading, do you GPS track the routes?
If this is something that we would use?

If this is something that we would use, I wouldnt  mind putting the time into creating one.  I will start looking into what options are out there.  Maybe creating something on Google Earth.

When I put together group cycling rides I use an app on my phone called Footpath. You can just draw out on the map the route. Just be sure to turn off the magnet otherwise it will jump to the nearest road. It works pretty well. It'll give you the total miles and elevation. Might now be the best for this application for this but may work for someone with patience. You can then share the photos to be printed or just viewed online.

We can do it using Google maps as far as pins go. But for trails there a bunch of options. I actually started one last week but it's just way points and not full trails. I'll see if there is an easier way for us to do it.

I know this will be handy for a lot of us.

Google Earth was running slow, so I didn't clean up the way this looks.  This is an example of what we should be able to do on Google Earth.

Did we ever get anywhere with this idea? This would be a great addition to the new layout.

All you gotta do is just like you did before,  except get he embed code. done. Then post in the trail thread for that trail,  if there isn't one, just create a new trail thread.

Admins can make sure the embedded trail map is in the OP.

I think what he meant was a browse able map, like the member map, except with trails pinned.  Perhaps clicking the pin would take you to the trail forum.  I'm sure you're still busy with all the upgrade stuff but it does seem like a nice idea. We could do camping spots as well...

I know what he meant, my statement still applies. Google Earth and Google maps let you make maps and save them,  then embed them.

To be more clear, so far as I have seen there is not a plugin for the forum to do this easily. Hence, I suggest. Someone make a trail map using google, share the embedded map, and we have a shareable map for each one of our trail threads. The maps can be saved to edit.

Unless, myself or Pitsnipe or Hammer want to go and make XXX number of trail maps....

There is another option. If there is not anyone out there that already does this easily, which I will look into again, then we can suggest the forum raise funds to pay a programmer to do this and make it how we want.

I imagine that either way will bring visitors to this site, but keep in mind, unless we make it private only, everyone will see our map info. Which, means we are missing out, those places like Forest Service and such that sell trail maps, will be recouping funds, and we will just be giving it away. Something to think about...

I have no idea where 3/4 of the trails listed on our website are. I have to google it and find it on another website.  That why I thought a trail map would be a good idea.
I will screw around with a google earth or wikiloc version of a trail map.  I have 6 or 7 trails of my own Ill put on it. If it looks promising, Ill share it with the group.  If we want to continue with the map, we can grow it larger from there. If you dont want to use it, we can just discard it.  If we continue with the project, I agree on making it private..  Maybe we can have all the information in the "Supporting members forum"

I was actually thinking the same thing.  I was interested in a camp spot map as well.  But I think having people pin trails on a map may require too much IT side work  Perhaps a simpler solution, like organizing trails by region and putting trail length and difficulty in the title.

zeemaps.com is a pretty cool website for mapping locations with pins like google, but I'm not sure how that works with offroad trails or being able to print the maps afterwards. However the site is Free for basic use. :)

It would be nice to see all the trails on one map so good luck.
