Title: Searching for 2005-2006 Xterra
Post by: DrewDs85 on February 14, 2014, 01:54:50 PM
Hello all, I'm looking into a 2005-2006 Xterra, i had a few questions about things to look for before I make a buy. I know about the SMOD problem, I am curious if  a new radiator or bypass will be the fix, as long as the problem hasn't already got into the Tranny. Are there any other big issues I should be looking for?? ( besides belts, wp, and Tstat n such) Is this vehicle much better than the gen 1s or is it just too much of a money pit to get into, in turn the gen 1 being the better purchase?? Just wanted to get input before I she'll out the cash. Thanks for al the help

Gen 2 is the way to go, bigger motor, better although not great mpg's. As long as it doesnt have SMOD already your good just replace with new radiator Asap and or do rad bypass with extra tranny cooler.

Timing chain and guides can be an issue and recommend change at, at least 100k miles if not sooner.

Rear leaf springs are notoriously weak and bottom out easily with weight in the back, fix is new Alcan or Deaver leaf pack or add a leafs.

Lastly if you want to wheel it I would highly recommend a Off Road or Pro 4x edition which comes with a rear diff E-locker, if basic 4x4 stuff and no need for e-locker (open rear diff) you want a S or SE edition. If no 4wd then whatever 2wd you want.

Good luck with purchase and keep in touch on the forum.

everyones going to have different opinions about 1st vs 2nd gens.  they both have pros and cons.  I personally am a 1st gen enthusiast and to be more specific the 1.5 gen.

Gen 2 is the way to go

As noted, a case can be made for either one.. I'll just add if my intention were to build a low horse power truck that'll climb telephone poles with a TC gear reduction for about $800, that I can sleep comfortably in, I'm getting another 2001. (Square headlights ftw ;D)
Expedition vehicle with a paper tiger drivetrain, bad mileage, and relatively expensive and limited aftermarket, I'd go with another Gen 2. I would forgo the earlier variants of them as well, maybe late 2010 and newer for me.

I have owned two 2nd gens now and have driven a couple 1st gens. Engine power is a big difference(2nd gen all the way). 1st gen has a timing belt and 2nd gen has timing chain. The big thing to look out for is SMOD and the rear leaf springs are pretty weak and sag in the 2nd gen.
My only regret after owning two 2nd gens is not getting the OR/Pro4x model. I say 2nd gen all day.

Depends what you want to do with the X.  The 2nd Gen will be able to tow easier, because of the bigger engine (4.0L vs 3.3L).

The early model second gens had some issues with the tranny/radiator, and also with the rear diffs (only 2 spider gears instead of 4).  Also, the FSU has a tendency to fail prematurely.  And, from personal experience, my cats have also failed prematurely on my 2nd gen, but not on my 1st gen.

The first gens are underpowered, but are more bullet proof (better diffs).  And, they are easier to do a Solid Axle Swap (SAS) on than the 2nd Gen (partially because they have a gear box instead of a rack and pinion steering setup).  If you are looking to build a hardcore offroad truck, the 1st gen would be a better choice, IMHO.  But, if you want a DD / toy hauler, then the 2nd gen is a better choice.

Hey, thanks for all the posts, it will really help make my decision. Sounds like the overall dependability of the Gen 1 is undeniable, but a little underpowered. And if all is well and get the radiator swapped out the HP will definitely come in handy on the Gen 2. I see the goods n bads with both. I guess I'll have to see what turns up n where I can get the best deal. Thanks again.

If it was me, I would get 2nd Gen all the way, yeah it has a few issues but what vehicle doesnt? The 1st gen has plenty also.

Going 1st gen means older, less power, more miles, etc, etc...

Unless your going to build it into a trail rig only, 1st gen would be ok for that, but dd/weekend wheeler 2nd gen is where I would start.
