Title: Camping at Bear Flats
Post by: Hammer (Avi) on June 08, 2014, 09:10:49 PM
We will be camping at Bear flats near Payson July 11th-12th.  There is a creek/pond located near the camp sites typically there is good trout fishing either by fly or spinner/grubs.  Additionally you can cool off in the creek so pack a swimsuit.  This is a great spot if you haven't checked it out before, lots of crawdads and creek area to explore.  The road in is maintained but steep at times, a 2wd should be fine so long as it does not rain.  Here is a link (https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Phoenix,+AZ,+USA/34.2847902,-111.0686002/@33.8668789,-111.8502499,124132m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m8!4m7!1m5!1m1!1s0x872b12ed50a179cb:0x8c69c7f8354a1bac!2m2!1d-112.0740373!2d33.4483771!1m0) to the site.

EDIT:  If you would like to meet to caravan up, please meet Here (https://www.google.com/maps/dir//Shell/@33.458842,-111.8468643,15z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m0!1m5!1m1!1s0x0:0x17afd7f8de65ce88!2m2!1d-111.84348!2d33.465975) between 6-6:30.

I'll be up there for the Fat Tire run (Aug 1-3).

I'm down for either of those weekends.

For the record, this might be my last club trip unless a trail run gets planned this month. I'm moving to Salt Lake the last week of July. :( I'll miss you guys.

Come on, everyone! It's my last trip with AZXC. I see lots of interest in the Fat Tire trip, why not this one?

Possibly. Are the picks posted during a drought?

Possibly. Are the picks posted during a drought?

It's usually safe to assume that every picture taken in Arizona was during a drought.

Lol, maybe I'll drive up on an off day this week to scout it, make sure there is still water.

When exactly were you planning on heading up there? My wife works Friday so we would not be able to leave until later that evening.

I was going to ask the same question.  I get off work at 2pm on Friday, and was planning on driving up there then. Do a little hiking/exploring, then meet up with you guys.  I do work Saturday afternoon, so I wont be able to stay both nights.  That is if I can make it. Im about 65% sure I will be there on Friday night.
Is there a specific parking/camping spot?  I can get there early and park there to help hold a space.

If people can't caravan up there everybody usually shows up whenever they can. It's camping, there's really no set time. I'm only camping Friday, probably leaving sometime after lunch on Saturday is what usually happens. Whoever gets there first tends to find a spot big enough for the group.

I'll probably head up there mid afternoon... 3 or 4ish, not sure yet. I'm on the west side but I'm down to meet up somewhere to do the trek up there if people want.

We need a permit or anything? I see what looks like homes and such on the sat map.

No permits for national forest land.

No permits, just grab a spot.  The cabins are after the bridge, which is private land, but there are many dispersed sights prior to the bridge.  It is well wooded for shade, so bring a hammock if you have one, something to drink, and we will have a good time.  AZXC of course will provide some food, I will need to look into fire restrictions before we head up.

I was just going to ask about fire restrictions...camping with gas sucks.

It looks like it has been raining but fire restrictions are still in place.  We will have to play it by ear but I will bring a lantern and burner to cook on.  I'm ok with no fire, it will be better for star gazing anyways.

The link should be very close, hopefully we will be able to get a spot down by the water.  I will print up some AZXC signs to hang for direction.

Sorry, just looked at the map and it makes no sense for anyone to meet as far north as carefree.  It is way out of the way, instead lets meet at the shell at McDowell and 87, here. Prolly due to the rain that's been in that area. Which I hope doesn't happen while we are there.
