Title: Fat Tire Run - Aug 1-3
Post by: AZ-Ted on June 13, 2014, 06:21:58 AM
Hey AZXC, it's time again for the annual Fat Tire Run!!!

When:  Aug 1-3
Where:  Flagstaff / Grand Canyon
What:  65+ mile mountain bike ride from Flagstaff to the Grand Canyon
Charity: This ride raises money for the Marine League Charities (aka Toys for Tots, Wounded Marines, etc).
Our Role: We provide on-course support for the riders.  If they break down and/or can't continue, we will shuttle them to the next SAG (Stop And Group) stop.

We typically get up to Flag on Friday afternoon / evening and camp at "Start Camp".  On Saturday, we are up early and drive out to our assigned spots on the trail.  We are on the trail for a good portion of the day (bring your own lunch, water, snacks).  On Saturday afternoon, we make it to the finish line just outside of the Grand Canyon (aka "End Camp").  At End Camp, the Marines cook a big fajita dinner, and Fat Tire donates the beer.  After dinner, we have a big bonfire, and goldfish (the crackers) massacre!  On Sunday morning, the Marines cook up a big breakfast, and then we break camp to head for home.

This is a great event, and one that I try to make every year.  We can always use more trucks on the trail, but let's try to keep it Nissans only (i.e. don't post this on a non-Nissan board).  That being said, if you have a buddy with another make of vehicle, they would be welcome to join us.

As always, we need a truck count.  Please post up if you are going:

1.  AZ-Ted
2.  Azfronty99
3.  PitSnipe (tentative)
4.  remo1991 (tentative)
5.  WHPIVxterra
6.  rushnrockt
7.  DBAX1 (aka DBAX)
8.  pinchel (+1 or 2 trucks)

tent is a good idea.  some sort of shelter in case it rains.  it will get cold overnight (40s, sometimes 30s).

I have almost every year.  I bring all my crap with me, and then get too lazy / intoxicated before I set anything up - lol.  I guess there are a few benefits for being short (I'm only 5'7").

I'm glad there is some interest again this year.  This is an event that AZXC / SWANKy has been participating in for at least the last 10 years.  I started attending in 2007 - although I did miss the last two years due to scheduling conflicts.

Here is what I have so far:

1.  AZ-Ted
2.  Azfronty99
3.  PitSnipe (tentative)
4.
5.

Have a couple questions.  Is the trail where we will be easy navigated by a 2 wheel drive no lift X ?  And is this a kid friendly ish event ? I think my 5 year old son would have a blast camping and being out there.

Start Camp and End Camp as well as certain portions of the route are easily doable in a stock 2WD.  That being said, there are spots along the route where 4x4 is preferable - especially if there has been any rain in the area (excessive mud).  It is possible to volunteer at the SAG stops - these are typically close to the road (SR 180) and are easily reachable in 2WD.  People have brought their kids in the past - anything from toddlers on up.  Friday night is pretty laid back, but Saturday night - especially around the campfire - where people are drinking, smoking, and carrying on might be where the little ones will hear some language they may or may not be used to hearing.

Here are some helpful things that I've learned over the years of attending this event:

1.  Bring some sort of shade screen:  an EZ Up, a big umbrella, or a tarp will work well.  Some of the check points are out in the high desert, and there is not much shade around.

2.  Bring plenty of water.  I actually bring an extra case of bottled water just in case the riders need some.

3.  Bring sun screen.  You will be in the high desert, and will get sunburned easily.

4.  Bring a first aid kit.  It doesn't have to be a giant kit.  In the past, I have given the riders band-aids and aspirin.

5.  Bring a jacket and hat.  The weather is beautiful during the day (70s-80s), but at night, it can get into the 40s and even 30s.

6.  If you bring dogs, they must be leashed at all times when they are out of the truck.

This is copied in from one of the prior year's events.  All the same directions apply this year.  From Stone:

"DIRECTIONS FOR FIRST TIMERS

Fill up your GAS TANK in Flagstaff

Directions to Start Camp

HWY 180 North (NW) out of Flagstaff. It's about 7 miles to the turn off on your left (FR 222).

It is just after a long straight portion of road as you pass Fort Valley and the last of the houses and just past a street that is Bader on the left and Roundtree on the right.

If you pass FR 151 on your right you went to far.

You should also see a bright yellow sign with red letters that say Toys For Tots etc. at FR 222. Or you can look on a map for HWY 180 and 222. There is a sign post there that will have glow sticks on it from dusk to whenever.

So it's like a mile a so down FR 222 and there is camp.

If you get there after sundown PLEASE BE QUIET. The party is the next night.

End camp directions are :

Hwy 180 to Hwy 64, North (right) on 64 for about 22.5 miles.

Right on FR 302 There is a "scenic view" sign right before the turnoff.

Fr 302 about 9 miles to a fork with 301A

Right on 301A 1-1.5 miles to camp.

YOU WILL NEED

Dinner Friday night.

Saturday Breakfast and lunch, water etc. keep in mind we'll be out on the trail at lunchtime.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE remember that you are there solely to assist riders. DO NOT DRIVE your truck when there are riders present, pull over and wait AND DON'T TAILGATE riders."

What's the approximate time we'd meet up and head out Friday? I should explain, so I have two friends that would like to go, but they really want to come and bring their own trucks. They both drive Jeeps. Not sure if they can even make it if we leave early. Also, is it ok they drive up or no?

Sure, if your buddies have Jeeps, they are welcome.  But, please don't post this run on a non-Nissan board.

Not sure about the caravaning.  You may want to post up a time that works for you, and see who else can go.  Most years, there are a few groups that meet up and ride up together.

I never caravan, as I never know when I'll be able to get out of work.

I always travel light for this trip.  In the past, I have gotten in pretty late, so I have Friday dinner on the road, and bring breakfast bars and lunch meat for Saturday.

Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast are provided by the Marine League Charities.

No idea on the caravan, as I never know when I can get out of work.  Post up when you are going, and people may be able to join you.

Maybe you and I can caravan out! I've got one passenger to pick up, we'll only be 1 vehicle instead of 3. We plan to bring a tent, although depending when we leave and arrive we may not setup, a couple tarps for quick shade/rain cover, an easy up cover 10x10, a larger cooler with ice, water/powerade, and probably some beer.

Most likely going the route of quick foods and planning on scarfing dinner and breakfast with the Marines.

For those of you who have been before, are we in groups of vehicles or are we isolated to singles along the route?

Sounds like a idea. I was thinking mid afternoon? I got a camper on my truck but I may bring a tent as well so no real rush to set things up.

I plan on heading up the hill around 6pm on Friday. I also am packing light. I plan on sleeping in the X and only plan on bringing a cooler for water and other choice liquids. I'm still working on some type of device for shade.

From what I have read. Arrive Friday night and set up a small camp. Pack up first thing in the morning and report to the designated spot on the route. It sounds like we will be spread out. When race ends we set up camp at finish area where the party begins. Pack up camp Sunday morning and head back down the hill.

On Sunday as we leave if anyone would like to run a trail I would be down. Could find something up there or maybe Sedona or something else.

We are spread out throughout the course.  Once the last rider passes you, it's your choice if you want to fall in with the rest of the vehicles sweeping the course, or if you want to hit the highway and proceed to end camp.  I have always chosen to sweep the course (pick up the signs and any garbage left by the riders).

"Have a 4-Wheel drive truck and want to help out? We need a couple of people to help us mark the course on Friday August 1st. Must be available to play in the dirt all day. Good time guaranteed. Contact us ASAP flag2gcride@gmail.com"

Another reason I would personally like to get their early. I want more time to play and relax. :)

Great turnout, another outstanding time in the pines..
The weather was perfect; sunny and warm (where I was anyhow) throughout Saturday during the race, and the sound of rain on the tent overnight, is joy a desert rat like myself can't buy w/ money. Marshalls Militia was a big group, nice to see some faces of folks who hadn't been in a while, and as noted, nice to see AZXC had a good group there too. Like a wise man once said, "This event is bigger than the club." If you had a good time, and you've seen how much good it does for an honest charity, make it a part of your schedule, every year. You'll find it's something to look forward to, and some things you do and see, will never be forgotten. I was saying goodbyes on Sunday and remarked, it's amazing that some of our best friends are people we may only see once or twice a year (at an event like this), but it's like we were never away from each other.. It's like coming home to your family. Your mud-flinging, beer chugging, pine tree loving family. Cheers

Just a few pics. I should have taken more, but I was more interested in soaking it in.

Well said, Dan.  Great to see you and Jessica again - and Sayuri, too!

EDIT:  and your kids were awesome!  They helped me collect quite a bit of firewood (that we didn't end up using, but still cool, nonetheless).
