Title: CANVAZ 2014
Post by: GhostX on July 01, 2014, 07:58:55 AM
Arizona brothers (and sisters  8) 8))...the CANVAZ rotation for 2014 is located in Arizona.

This will be an opportunity to reprise the original from 2011 that you all hosted so well in Sedona.

Avi...Ted...who would like to start the ball rolling?

Us Cali "dudes" will be hosting again in 2015, and hope to keep this fun trail run going strong for both AZXC and SCCX!

PM me or post up your ideas here...thanks guys!

John/GhostX  :)

I won't be able to help organize this year's CANVAZ.  Hopefully, someone else from AZXC can take the reins on this one.

I agree, it's a great run, and October is a good time of year to make a run.

Would be a shame to see it end after only 3 years.

Hold the mortician I have been out of town for a friends wedding.  Just got back this morning and I am looking forward to this.  Not sure what is typically involved in putting this together, camping, trails, food?

It is a joint run with Nissan folks from CAlifornia, NeVada, and AriZona (CANVAZ).  For the last 3 years it has been held on a weekend in October.  The first year was in AZ, the second was in CA, and last year was in NV.  The idea is that it will continue to cycle every three years, so this year's event should be held in AZ.

Awesome opportunity to camp, wheel, and get to know our fellow enthusiasts!  The question is, where would be a good spot to camp in Oct.  Sedona/Camp Verde/Tucson should all be good.

Back in 2011, we did the trails up in Sedona (Broken Arrow and Greasy Spoon) and we camped on Schnebly Hill Rd.  It might be nice to do to a different area this time.  I've never wheeled down in Tucson, but I understand there are some good trails down there.  Might be a nice change of pace / scenery.  Just my .02

I'm thinking Tucson as well, there is that trail we ran last time I was down there.  A waterfall at the end, a couple river crossings, and plenty of camping space.  Sounds awesome.

A couple things we learned from hosting CANVAZ in Big Bear in 2012 -

-keep it simple - trying to get sponsors the first year was time consuming.  In '12, we skipped this and it saved a lot of headaches and we focused on the trails.

(http://i971.photobucket.com/albums/ae195/DzrtX/CANVAZ%20II%20-%20California%20Edition/DSC_0123.jpg) (http://s971.photobucket.com/user/DzrtX/media/CANVAZ%20II%20-%20California%20Edition/DSC_0123.jpg.html)

-camping everyone in one spot - when we let people arrange their own lodging/camping etc., this also freed a lot of organizational headaches.  And, we had more couples, as camping at Schnebly road in 19* weather was...fun.  Having lodging options close by in Big Bear was cool, because some of the first timers who didn't necessarily want to camp still made the trip.

This is also cool if you have folks driving longer distances to attend the event.  It's up to you as the host, but trying to secure/promote camping for a group in one area that fluctuates in size, and can literally change at the last minute - again, pass the Excedrin/Advil/Aleve/craft beers.

(http://i971.photobucket.com/albums/ae195/DzrtX/CANVAZ%202011/DSC_0075.jpg) (http://s971.photobucket.com/user/DzrtX/media/CANVAZ%202011/DSC_0075.jpg.html)

-research and schedule the meet times/meet spots in advance.  Estimating/communicating how long the day on the trail will be is also very helpful.

(http://i971.photobucket.com/albums/ae195/DzrtX/CANVAZ%20II%20-%20California%20Edition/DSC_0028.jpg) (http://s971.photobucket.com/user/DzrtX/media/CANVAZ%20II%20-%20California%20Edition/DSC_0028.jpg.html)

SCCX is looking forward to attending and supporting CANVAZ 4 and AZXC's efforts this year, as well as hosting again in 2015.

We look forward to helping continue the tradition of fun wheeling that was kicked off in Arizona in 2011.

Please feel free to hit me up with a PM if you have any questions.

Lol, great to hear.  The place I am thinking of has lots of room for camping, and average temps top out in the 80s and lower in the 60s.  The biggest problem is that I have only run the trails once.  Hopefully one of the Tucson guys will step up and do some trail guiding.

I have only attended CANVAZ I, so I don't know what happened the last two years.  For CANVAZ I, we traveled on Friday, and setup camp on Friday afternoon/evening.  The trail runs were on Saturday, and a few of us did an optional run on Sunday (after breaking camp).

"Usually" the third weekend of the month...but since you're hosting, set it and they will come.  Marcin had run a poll over on thenewx one year for the dates...so maybe one of those here?  Depends on how much exposure/outside participation you want???

Personally, I like simple...but hey, it's your show... ;D

Yes, what Ted said.

Friday has traditionally been a travel/set-up day (again, feel free to break from here if necessary), most trails on Saturday, and then maybe an early morning/afternoon trail on Sunday.

Campfire/get together's at cabins/campsites took place on Friday and Saturday nights when CANVAZ was here in Cali in Big Bear.

Setting trail times/routes/comms/leaders on the forums (SCCX) beforehand simplified some of the daily logistics for us in 2012.

Tucson looks great, scanned through the thread link...cool shots of the waterfall.  :)

I had considered putting up a vote for the date.  My biggest concern is my limited knowledge of the Tucson trails.  I have run some of the trails before and had a great time, but would not feel comfortable leading them.  For that reason I am trying to work out dates that ensure the Tucson locals I need to trail lead are available.  I am hoping to get some feedback from them as to what trails to run and where to camp as well.  Trying to keep this simple and easy for those who want to attend and those who are willing to help run.  To any of the Tucson locals that have been keeping an eye on this thread, if I haven't contacted you and you would be interested in trail leading or tail gunning, please pm me.

I am willing to help out and lead some runs.  I know the Redington Pass area like the back of my hand.  The Chiva Falls run can be made into to pretty long run if you want as there are lots of offshoots and side trails to check out.  You could make Chiva sort of the "main event."  There is also the Chimney Rock loop which is pretty fun.  One more option for that area is more of a scenic run around the back side of Mt. Lemmon and up to the pines.

The earlier in October we do it the better it is for me.

The 18th would work well for me (The date revolves around my schedule right?..lol).  I can tell you from organizing CANVAZ III in vegas that trying to squeeze in a run Friday was a bit much (I attended part of CANVAZ I also).  Just my opinion but I would go Friday arrival/BBQ/camp set up, Saturday one or two  trails (a night run would be sweet), Sunday a short morning trail as people will need to drive home.

John/GhostX

Wise words here.  For CANVAZ III we had over 15 trucks confirmed to attend but at the end of the day only like 5 or 6 showed (and very few CA or AZ trucks made it).  We considered getting sponsors but I am glad we didn't because we wouldn't have upheld out estimated numbers.  The fluctuation of numbers is also a reason to pick a camping spot where +/- one half the expected group size will not be an issue.  For CANVAZ III we technically didn't reach the minimum required for the group campsite I reserved.

Researching/posting overall itinerary, meeting spots, trail difficulty, and campsites/hotels is very important!  I pre-ran all the tails and did write-ups prior to CANVAZ III (you can checkout some of the posts), you might talk some Tucson guys into doing this. One thing I wish we would have done was posted a contact number and CB channel on the forum, in case someone coming into town had issues finding us (which happened).

Feel free to hit me up if you have any questions.

Talking to the locals it seems like the weekend of the 4th is what will work best, which leaves us just 2 short months out.  I know Tim and Ben have run the trails multiple times so I am hoping they will give us the benefit of their experience.  We are planning to pre run the trails, hopefully in the next month, but I have yet to set a date for that and see who will be available.  Camping should be easy, there is a lot of area available for camping.  The site I stayed at last time was undeveloped, if that is ok with everyone.  There should be plenty of hotels available in Tucson if out of towners prefer.  Maybe some of the locals could recommend a couple places.

I have run the trails that we will be doing more times than I can count.  I will write up a decent description when I have a little more time.  As far as the camping goes I think we just need to make up a few rough signs to guide everyone in off the main road.  I will take a drive up there soon and get the exact mileage into where we will be.  The camping is primitive.  There is a OHV staging area close to where we will be camped that does have a bathroom, albeit not a very clean one.

As far as hotels go, I couldn't make any recommendations since I never stay in them here.

So...confirming dates/location:

Friday, October 3rd - arrival/set-up/informal BBQ - no formal trails, possible night run?

Saturday, October 4th - main trail day, camping, campfire, festivities

Sunday, October 5th - morning quick trail, departure/travel day

Tucson area, trails to be determined by Tim and Ben?

Set comms up, for both CB and Ham radio?

Lodging beyond camping TBD.

On the thread from the last time we camped there, there should be the FR rd # for the turn off for the campsite. I can't think of it off the top of my head. I do know it's right after a cattle guard and is kind of quartering back as you go by it.
