Title: CANVAZ 2014 Hosted by AZXC Oct 3rd-5th
Post by: Hammer (Avi) on August 08, 2014, 09:06:55 PM
AZXC will be hosting CANVAZ this year!

For those of you new to this event, CANVAZ is a collaborative meetup between California, Nevada, and Arizona Nissan offroad groups.  Every year the hosting state changes, and this year is Arizona's turn.
This is an opportunity for AZ locals to show off some of our beautiful outdoors to fellow enthusiasts.  If you have did not or have not attended Gone this is a great way to meet a lot of the guys that attend that event and make some new friends.

This is typically a large event, and I expect this year to be no exception.  Please post up if you plan to attend as we may need to split up the wheeling groups depending on group size.

The details:

When: October 3rd, 4th, and 5th.

Where: We will be camping and running trails in the area of Redington pass.  The camp site will be Here (https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Phoenix,+AZ/32.3033724,-110.6197937/@32.3022865,-110.6173619,1202m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m9!4m8!1m5!1m1!1s0x872b12ed50a179cb:0x8c69c7f8354a1bac!2m2!1d-112.0740373!2d33.4483771!1m0!3e0?hl=en)

CB Channel: 17

Trail leads: Tim (Timh), Ben (coatimundi01), Avi (Hammer)

Current Itinerary:

Friday, October 3rd - arrival/set-up/informal BBQ - no formal trails, possible night run.

Saturday, October 4th - main trail day - Chiva falls, camping, campfire, festivities

Sunday, October 5th - morning quick trail - Chimney Rock Loop (pics Here (http://www.azxterraclub.com/forum/index.php?topic=732.0)) , departure/travel day

I have obligations that Friday/Saturday which will most likely prevent me from going, if I can get there for Saturday's trail run I will but don't count on me.  I understand that trying to accommodate everyone's schedule is impossible...... but if it gets changed to late October (17th-19th) then I am in for sure!

I would recommend at least a moderate lift and 33s, but I have seen it done with a stock 4x4.  Everyone must have at least one recovery point both front and back.

If you're looking for an excuse go for it.  But there is an alternate route to the main obstacle and everything else is 4x4 capable.  You should have recovery points though.

I'll also beat the drum for some SCCX dudes & dudettes...I'm sure we'll get a few.  :)

I am considering going as well.  Now I do have a 2wd so I would probably hang back at camp and enjoy a little down time.  I would like to go and meet more of you all.  I will see how the schedule pays out as time get closer too.  Sounds like a fun event though.

You should definitely join us.  You will likely have no problem finding an open seat to ride the trails.  Worst case scenario there are tons of dirt roads and area to explore that is 2wd accessible around the camp.

They are tow hooks or hitches, in your front there should be a stock tow hook.  On your back it is good to have a tow hitch or something similar.  If you get stuck and we have to winch you out it is just something we don't have to worry about breaking.  If you don't have a hitch then we can use your rear axle, it's just harder to get to.

No, it is a dispersed sight which means no real services, but it is free to all.  I plan on heading down early Friday to set up signs and reserve a spot.

It would be a good idea if someone local could prerun prior to CANVAZ.  These trails can change quite a bit with just one good rain, and we have had several in the past few weeks.

Do we have someone in Tucson that is active that will do this? I'd go just to get out of town if I had better rig.

I'm pretty sure from the map so long as you fuel up in Tucson city limits you'll be good. We aren't exactly going off range.

We shouldn't need to do any prerunning.  I have been exploring those trails up there for 15 years.  They are pretty rocky and don't change all that much with the rain.  There have been a bunch of other groups running the trail recently also and I haven't heard of anything unusual.

I did get the chance yesterday to drive up to the campsite at least.  The main road is a bit rough from the rain but the campsite is still accessible in 2wd.

First I blew the CV going over an obstacle, then as I was reversing, the truck slid/landed hard and sound the steering wheel at the same time causing it bust.

Well I have some bad news as well, I broke my rack and pinion in half this on Saturday along with a CV joint. I don't think I will have it fixed before the trip.

Bummer.  I replaced my rack a few years ago with one from Rock Auto (my stock rack sprung a leak).

Does anybody know if the campsite and the trail leading in are accessible with a trailer?  I'm a real wimp and can't sleep on the ground anymore so I was thinking about renting a trailer to take out there so I didn't have to drive all the way back to town for a hotel.

Why not just put the back seats down and put a air up mattress or a small regular mattress in the back!?

Did that for many years.  I'm over it.  My idea of roughing these days is Motel 6. ;D

I took a a trailer to the camp spot last time I was there, shouldn't be an issue on the main road.  As for the campsite it depends on the trailer, a large trailer may have issues if we end up in the back of the site.   I plan on being there early friday so it shouldn't be a problem.

Avi, we will be in the same site as last time, you can't camp at the area right off the main road, they fenced it off.

As far as a trailer goes, if it doesn't have some decent ground clearence you might have an issue.  Its a little bit tight and twisty getting back to the campsite.

Early, like before 3pm but then the wife tells me she won't be home before then. So I may not be able roll until after 6pm.

Is there a spot around where he could park the trailer?  It is a large area there has got to be a pull off somewhere he can park that for the weekend.

I will bring a cast iron grill and skillet, usually someone brings a grate for the fire.  I don't recall any built in grill, but there are almost 3 always 3 or 4 people that bring there own.  Usually we end up sharing, I bring a 5 lbs propane tank so everyone can use.

Just a little ways up the main road from where we are camping is the ATV staging area. Real wide open flat spot. Where the main campsite is actually connects to that staging area with a couple little trails.

Quick question.  Whats the difficulty of these trails we run? I know some people in here including me who might not have a rig capable of running some of the posted trails. Just from previous pics and storys of them trails they sounded some what difficult but I could be wrong.

The hardest trail we run I have seen a stock rig get through, just ask Remo  :P  That said, for those who don't want to run that section of the trail there is a bypass that will get them back to the camp site.

Also, everyone bring firewood!  The area doesn't have much to offer and that is usually picked clean anyway.

FYI, I was thinking we would run the trail the reverse direction from what we did last time.  We will go down the tough section early and then head out the easier route.  This should make it a little bit easier for the stock rigs.  Time providing there is another cool spot near the falls to check out that has some deep pools to swim and even some cliff jumps if anyone is feeling brave.
