Title: New U Bolts with Add a Leaf?
Post by: Jo-BOB on September 02, 2014, 12:14:08 AM
Hey sorry if this has already been discussed but I couldnt find a defintive answer.

I have seen people say you NEED new u bolts when you do an add a leaf or install new leaf packs (new leaf packs make sense if the u-bolts are not long enough). But with the add a leaf are the old U bolts not reusable, and need to be replaced?

It's hard to remember because you take off the overload leaf when you AAL.  I'm not sure if that gives you the space or not.

I did not need new ones my stock ones still fit when I took off the overload.

Yes first gen. But from my experience that I had I would keep the overload springs on if you are planning on running heavy loads or getting into heavy flex situations cause my bent in half when doing that without the overloads

I'm not so much worried about the u-bolts being long enough, but strong enough. I have long u-bolts with thread to spare from when I put the OME's on awhile ago at a mod day. BUT this is the info I dug up:

"The u-bolts actually stretch over time with the stresses they handle. Keeping and using them as trail spares is ok but for an extended amount of time could be a little dangerous."

and someone shared this link: http://youtu.be/4NKnoBz11WE

So, I'm thinking I'll want to buy new u-bolts just in case and then cut them again so they dont stick out super far.

That would be my main concern. On one hand, they usually last the life of the vehicle.  On the other, they aren't very expensive, I think even Oriellys has some that will fit.

Ya I'm not even going to chance it. I'll pick some up, I got them from pepboys or something last time and they worked out great.

My Ranchos came complete.    Make sure you don't screw up your rear thrust. Mine was off and at certain speeds it got a little challenging.
