Title: Fat Tire 2015 (7/31-8/2)
Post by: AZ-Ted on January 22, 2015, 12:04:22 PM
Hey everyone, this year's Fat Tire Run is on the weekend of July 31st - August 2nd.

When:  Jul 31st - Aug 2nd
Where:   Flagstaff / Grand Canyon
What:  65+ mile mountain bike ride from Flagstaff to the Grand Canyon
Charity: This ride raises money for the Marine League Charities (aka Toys for Tots, Wounded Marines, etc).
Our Role: We provide on-course support for the riders.  If they break down and/or can't continue, we will shuttle them to the next SAG (Stop And Group) stop.

We typically get up to Flag on Friday afternoon / evening and camp at "Start Camp".  On Saturday, we are up early and drive out to our assigned spots on the trail.  We are on the trail for a good portion of the day (bring your own lunch, water, snacks).  On Saturday afternoon, we make it to the finish line just outside of the Grand Canyon (aka "End Camp").  At End Camp, the Marines cook a big fajita dinner, and Fat Tire donates the beer.  After dinner, we have a big bonfire, and goldfish (the crackers) massacre!  On Sunday morning, the Marines cook up a big breakfast, and then we break camp to head for home.

This is a great event, and one that I try to make every year.  We can always use more trucks on the trail, but let's try to keep it Nissans only (i.e. don't post this on a non-Nissan board).  That being said, if you have a buddy with another make of vehicle, they would be welcome to join us.

EDIT:  Here is a link to the Fat Tire event website:  http://flag2gc.com/ (http://flag2gc.com/)

EDIT:  This looks to be another good year for Nissans at Fat Tire!

Here are some helpful things that I've learned over the years of attending this event:

1.  Bring some sort of shade screen:  an EZ Up, a big umbrella, or a tarp will work well.  Some of the check points are out in the high desert, and there is not much shade around.

2.  Bring plenty of water.  I actually bring an extra case of bottled water just in case the riders need some.

3.  Bring sun screen.  You will be in the high desert, and will get sunburned easily.

4.  Bring a first aid kit.  It doesn't have to be a giant kit.  In the past, I have given the riders band-aids and aspirin.

5.  Bring a jacket and hat.  The weather is beautiful during the day (70s-80s), but at night, it can get into the 40s and even 30s.

6.  If you bring dogs, they must be leashed at all times when they are out of the truck.

This is copied in from one of the prior year's events.  All the same directions apply this year.  From Stone:

"DIRECTIONS FOR FIRST TIMERS

Fill up your GAS TANK in Flagstaff

Directions to Start Camp

HWY 180 North (NW) out of Flagstaff. It's about 7 miles to the turn off on your left (FR 222).

It is just after a long straight portion of road as you pass Fort Valley and the last of the houses and just past a street that is Bader on the left and Roundtree on the right.

If you pass FR 151 on your right you went to far.

You should also see a bright yellow sign with red letters that say Toys For Tots etc. at FR 222. Or you can look on a map for HWY 180 and 222. There is a sign post there that will have glow sticks on it from dusk to whenever.

So it's like a mile a so down FR 222 and there is camp.

If you get there after sundown PLEASE BE QUIET. The party is the next night.

End camp directions are :

Hwy 180 to Hwy 64, North (right) on 64 for about 22.5 miles.

Right on FR 302 There is a "scenic view" sign right before the turnoff.

Fr 302 about 9 miles to a fork with 301A

Right on 301A 1-1.5 miles to camp.

YOU WILL NEED

Dinner Friday night.

Saturday Breakfast and lunch, water etc. keep in mind we'll be out on the trail at lunchtime.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE remember that you are there solely to assist riders. DO NOT DRIVE your truck when there are riders present, pull over and wait AND DON'T TAILGATE riders."

+1 truck my buddy Roger, last year I rode with him in his Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Xterra broke down the day before we were both gonna drive up. Left it in the shop that weekend.

Sweet!  I'll update the attendees.  FYI, the riders rarely need help.  Some of us have bike racks, others just put the bike in the bed (fronty/titan) or on the roof (xterra/pathy).

It's always been kinda a show up when you can thing. I usually head up as early as possible Friday and stay at either end or start camps. They both have advantages and drawbacks. We usually camp a small distance from Start camp to not disturb the riders the night before they have 65 miles of butt pounding fun. lol End camp is nice because you don't have to setup twice, however you may have to get up early enough to meet Marshall to get your position on the trail.

Marshall usually knows about how many vehicles are going to be there based off who ordered shirts and he has an idea where he wants to position us on the trail. Nothing is set in stone and you don't need to run the whole thing if you want to be positioned more toward end camp. This may save you a ton of mud on your truck or like one year, driving through a flash flood.

If you want to caravan up make sure you start planning now.

Be prepared for a full day on the trail, bringing enough food and water to keep you satisfied until the Marines dinner Saturday. Hooraa

I will ask Marshall about splitting the group up and let just the hardcore (gotta run every inch of trail) guys follow the last stragglers into end camp to the finish line so we don't have a massively long line of vehicles waiting for two riders who take a break every 10 minutes of riding. I will also ask him to enforce the cutoff time for riders who haven't made it or obviously not going to make it to the Finish in an appropriate amount of time. Breaking into our beer drinking time.

Rain or shine it's always a good time. :)

Ordered shirts?

Not anymore.  The free t-shirts (for the driver only) are handled by the Dirty Girls at End Camp on Saturday afternoon.

Historically, Marshall used to collect all the t-shirt sizes and give the list to the Dirty Girls, and they would get them to him prior to the event.

Need to post up on here.  No registration for us.  If you do post that you are going, and then something changes and you can't go, PLEASE post that up, too.  That way, we keep our truck count correct.

Yes, it's pretty much get there when you can on Friday.  If you prefer to cruise up on Saturday, you'll need to be there by 06:00.  The ride starts at 07:00, and we need to get our assigned spots and be on the trail ahead of the start.

Marshall (aka Stone) will provide large-print maps of the route with the assigned spots circled.  Each truck will be given a spot to cover to help keep the riders on the course.  We ride out to our spots and wait for the riders to pass by.  After the last rider passes, we "sweep the course" -  picking up the course marker signs and any debris from the riders (usually stuff like blown bicycle tubes, dropped water bottles, etc.).  We follow the last (slowest) rider into camp.  This can sometimes make for a long day.  If you prefer not to ride the entire course with the sweep vehicles, you can choose exit the course onto US Route 180 and to go directly to End Camp (after the sweep vehicles have passed your spot).

Do you guys recommend leaving the back seat empty, meaning guest riders to a minimum in case someone needs a ride? Or is that unlikely?

Some years we pick up a lot of riders, and other years we hardly pick up any.  It is hard to predict this year's needs, but having room for at least one rider is good.  Space for two riders (or more) is awesome.  Some trucks will have more room and some less, so don't worry if you don't have much room.

I always figured to throw the bike on the roof if not enough room inside and the rider in the passenger front seat. Remember your camping gear will be in your rig too since there is two nights of camping.

Last year at my check point we saw a couple people eat it hard. They are really tough riders. We did help one lady rider that was bleeding. Cleaned her up and she was on her way. The riders refuse to be picked up. I believe that Ted was forced to pick up the last two stragglers.

We sold our X last year and now I want to go to this event. I can drive myself up, but if anyone needs a copilot for the race, let me know, otherwise I'll be sitting a camp all day drinking and smoking (which is fun also... LOL).

Hey guys it's Marshall.

I appreciate your willingness to help out a great cause yet another year.

I need to know how many of you are camping at start camp.  The route has changed a bit down there and I want to be sure to get you your maps and assignments.

You don't have to have an Xterra to participate, anything that can do a Forest Service road will be just fine.    You can hit me up at lithoq2@gmail.com or just reply to this thread.

Again, thanks so much for volunteering.

It's not quite one mile in (off of US-180) on FR222, the turnoff will be on the left-hand side.  The riders' Start Camp is farther down FR222 (also on the left-hand side of the road), if you made it to the rider's Start Camp you went too far.

I might have to withdraw from this event or at least withdraw my vehicle. With my suspension all messed up, I don't really want to put the stress on my vehicle until I have new UCA's. I'm still  most likely going to be taking my Dad's truck up to flag thursday to move a couch into my house in Flagstaff so I could probably take his Ridgeline and then ride along with someone if there's a seat open

I was wondering about the paths we were taking as well. Just Fire roads? Thinking of taking my bike to mess around on while posted up and at camp. But I don't want it getting jostled around like mad on the rack.

Some yes, some no. There are plenty of rigs that can pull you out if needed. You won't be stranded. Plus the coordinators will get you directions for surface roads and such if needed. This isn't that big of a deal guys, unless we get monsoon rains while out in the middle of it you won't have any issues getting anywhere.

Since there is a chance of rain, and I have never been up there in torrential down pours, plan for that. Worst possible case, plan as if you were camping in one spot for the night. This is a well coordinated event for folks on mountain bikes, supported by a bunch of experienced off-roaders and forest/desert folk. :)

You'll be fine. Maybe wet & muddy.

No.  If it rains up there, you can easily get stuck in the mud in 2WD.  Most of the trails are simply fire roads, and in dry conditions, high-clearance 2WD will have no issues.

There is one section shortly after SAG 1 - a hill climb and then descent down the backside that is a little rocky and tight (where the bottom of your vehicle may touch the rocks, and the exterior of the vehicle could get scratched).

More likely than not, you'll be fine.  I've been up there 7 times now, and only twice was it really muddy (2007 and 2011).  In fact in 2011, they had to stop the event at SAG1 due to the volume of rain coupled with continued lightning strikes.  That year, all the 2WDs bailed out onto US-180 to go either to End Camp or head home (they ended up canceling End Camp that year - no food and no beer).

My Friend Scott is going to be there again this year so that's one more vehicle to help.

Yeah that was the worst year when it rained out, but they had a party later on, that I didn't attend, but heard it was a lot of fun. The only other year that was miserable for me (besides the hangovers) was when they ran out of beer. :) But good times most others. Hanging out friends.

Just a reminder about the weather up between Flag and the Grand Canyon.  The daytime temps are really nice - usually in the mid-70s to mid-80s.  At night, it can easily get down into the 40s and sometimes the 30s.  For this reason, be sure to not only bring summer gear, but also a jacket, hat and gloves.  The mornings can be downright chilly - especially if you've lived in the valley for a few summers.

Another great year at Fat Tire!  It was great to see so many old friends and meet a bunch of new ones, too!!  We had great weather - mild, not too hot, not too cold, some rain and some mud, but not excessive amounts of either.  I didn't get a chance to take any pictures, but I am sure there will be many posted in the Fat Tire 2015 Pictures thread (hint:  someone should start one).

Special thanks to the crew at "SAG 0.5" who were there for me when I got "the call" about my dad.  And thanks to my entire wheeling family who comforted me when I got to End Camp.  This club has given me so much love over the years, and for that I am very grateful.

p.s.  I have a feeling we will start seeing a lot more of Wally (aka Onix) in the near future.  Stay tuned!

Fun as always. Most of us got shirts but may have gotten a size too small. If you get more XLs or bigger let us know. I'd be happy to purchase extras if they are available.
