Title: Broken Arrow Run 4/18/2015
Post by: Hammer (Avi) on March 08, 2015, 02:51:52 AM
Edited 4/11/2015

The time has come again for AZXC's annual Broken Arrow Run.  For those of you who haven't taken this trail before it is a beautiful run through Sedona's famous Red Rock.  Every year this trail fills up, so please RSVP with the number of rigs that will be with you so we can properly plan.  I would consider this a moderate trail, the most major required obstacle being Devils Staircase will damage stock steps so please remove yours if you plan on running this trail.

Photos and video from last year's run here (http://www.azxterraclub.com/forum/index.php?topic=1507.0)

Meeting: For those meeting and driving up from Phoenix we will be meeting at the McDonalds on Carefree at 8AM and leaving no later then 8:30.

*Based on the current number of attendees we will need to break into at least 2 groups.  Those of you planning on camping meet at the trail head no later then 9AM, and the group from Phoenix will run second.  We will meet at Picazzo's Pizza after the trail run for lunch.  Please comment if you would be interested in running the early run.

Attendees (those in blue will be staying in flag and running Broken Arrow first)

I'd be up for leaving the valley on Friday afternoon, and camping nearby (Camp Verde or Cottonwood areas).  That way, we could hit the trail earlier on Saturday and/or run more trails.  If the group is large enough, we could split into 2, like we did for CANVAZ 1.  Just my $.02

Put me down as 99% going. I love this trail. I believe we has 8 rigs last year. That was pushing it size wise. I agree with Ted on maybe two groups. Too soon to tell if I would be able to up Friday and camp.

Interested and possibly down for camping also. Hiked broken arrow a couple weeks ago and made me want to drive it.

Also, down for camping. I have to work that Saturday so I'm working on my options.

I'll put us down for that.  Wanted to explore Sedona for the longest time. Not sure if we can camp or not but if there is a group leaving Phoenix, we can leave earlier than 8-9 to make it up there plenty early.

In for camping and the trail. In fact, I did just this for Valentine's. Camped at Dead Horse Ranch (pretty nice place, I might say), and ran up the 761 to 9513, and took that into Sedona.

im assuming this run isnt for stock xterras??  lol

Why not? This is what we'd expect:

the most major required obstacle being Devils Staircase will damage stock steps so please remove yours if you plan on running this trail.

You should have seen me on the 9513. That was pretty not tame stuff, and I'm on All-Season highway tires. Therefor, I expect to see others like myself there!

By the way Ted, the route I was talking to you about after the Table Mesa cleanup was the 9513.

This is a 4x4 only trail, but stock should be fine so long as side rails and mud flaps are removed.

I was pretty sure that by your description, you were on the Greasy Spoon trail.  I googled "FR9513 Sedona", and found this link:  http://www.experience-az.com/adventures/4wd/greasyspoon/greasyspoonprint.html (http://www.experience-az.com/adventures/4wd/greasyspoon/greasyspoonprint.html)

It was Greasy Spoon (at least a portion of it, as Greasy Spoon spans several trail numbers).

That link makes it sound easy...  ::) Thanks for the info.

I wonder if it's harder in reverse, the direction I took.  Although that staircase seemed pretty daunting from a downhill perspective, I couldn't imagine trying to climb it with stock suspension.

It is harder in reverse, I think with good tires and good driving it is doable.  The issue is the trail is really only one way, so we need to post people at the top to stop traffic in order to run it in reverse.

^^I think FirstXRS was talking about Greasy Spoon trail in reverse.  You are correct about Broken Arrow being a one way trail.  We will have way too many rigs for anyone to attempt the climb of Devil's Staircase.

I'm in - going to be in Flagstaff that weekend so it's a short 20 minutes down or up 89 - And yes i am removing my step bars and mud flaps this weekend - looking at a set of Calmini Rock Sliders - any opinions?

Biggest recommendation I would make is that if you plan on using your roof rack regularly look for box sliders, or round with a platform to stand on.

You'll need to add a transfer case if you want to run Broken Arrow.  That being said, you can always head up with us and then ride along with someone for the Broken Arrow trail.  On the way out of Sedona, you could take Schnebly Hill Road back to I-17.  That is a fun trail similar to the Backroad to CK (Schnebly Hill Road is 2WD friendly).

No sitting out! I'm sure there are several of us who would be more than happy to take you along; and you already have one volunteer (pending approval for time off)! I have a seat if anything else falls through. Like Ted said, drive with us until we get to the trailhead, and especially if you're camping.

Camping if you choose to, permit for trust land should we cross any (which I think most of us have anyway), and maybe the red rock permit? That one I don't know.
Title: Re: Broken Arrow Run 4/18/2015
Post by: Hammer (Avi) on March 15, 2015, 08:06:16 AM
No fees for running Broken Arrow.

Not sure where you guys are planning on camping but if you want to stay in red rock area it will be only in pay camp sites.  Outside of the red rock is mostly Coconino Forest, my understanding is that dispersed camping is allowed and does not require a permit or land use tag as it is a national forest.  That said someone should probably start a separate camping thread so that we can get a list of who is interested and decide on a location.  I am not the best person for this because I am not yet sure if i can make it to the camp.

I have to work till 3pm on that Friday, and I am not too sure on the camping because of that. I'm still considering it. I think it might be easier for my family to make this a day trip, with the possibility of spending the night Saturday.

Not sure yet.  My buddy's GF might ride along.  I don't know if she'll be down to camp, or just ride up on Saturday.

If I head up on Saturday, I'd prefer to head up early.

It sure is! I will be camping Friday (and Saturday) night at Dead Horse Ranch. How did you want to go about the ride-along? I'm in the first group, so it would be an early drive from PHX on Saturday for you. Otherwise, you're welcome to camp as well with WHPIV, Xtiki, and myself. I'll just pick you up on Friday afternoon on the way out, if you're free.

Conveniently, the pizza joint we're meeting at after the run is on the highway we're on, when entering town from Cottonwood. I say just park there so after the trail you'll be all set.

If you're going to park for any length of time in sedona you might need a red rock pass i think it's called.

I never needed one or bought one, but know they are required for certain areas.

I say park at the trail head. Only one way in and one way out for this one.
Took me a minute to see this. I think this is even better.

I don't think she'll need the pass to park at the end of the street. I know it's required for some trails, or extended stops on trails in the area. I can't seem to find this particular piece of info.

You can't park on the street (Morgan Rd).  Not sure about parking at the trailhead, but if you are parked on the trail (more than 15 minutes), you need a pass.  Worst case, she could always park at a store or something (or at your camp).

EDIT:  Looking at their map, the Broken Arrow trail is marked by a "T" inside a black circle, and it says "No fee, no pass needed".

I ended up replacing my upper and lower A-Arms due to having a nearly completely toasted bottom joint, I knew it was close but had no idea until I took the tension off and saw the slop in it.  :o

I found the Best prices online and ordered them, even with shipping it was almost half what it'd cost to buy them from the local parts stores.

Looking forward to this.  Based on the current number of trucks we will likely be breaking the group into 3 runs.  I will be at the trail head to help organize the runs, take pictures, and make sure everything goes smoothly.  After the run look forward to AZXC buying some pizza at the meeting afterwords.

Sounds good.  The 4runner should do alright.  Come to think of it, Broken Arrow was the first trail I took it on many moons ago.  It will be nice to meet you guys.  My wife and I will be coming up from Phx on Saturday morning.

Thanks for the info on the ball joints.  I have had the Calmini kit on my Xterra for 3 years now and I have noticed that they have been going slowly.  I bought the Pathfinder ball joints a while ago but just never got around to swapping them out.

See you guys on Saturday.

...I don't think she'll need the pass to park at the end of the street. I know it's required for some trails, or extended stops on trails in the area. I can't seem to find this particular piece of info.

Here is a link to the Red Rocks info:  http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/coconino/recreation/?cid=stelprdb5416207 (http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/coconino/recreation/?cid=stelprdb5416207)

Thanks Ted! I couldn't find that for the life of me.

And I didn't consider having her just park at camp. They're aren't looking at any other vehicle information; just mine, and how many vehicles I said would be there.

So, Clifford, I'll leave it up to you. If you can get to Dead Horse by 8, we'll leave your truck at camp and return there when all is said and done. Otherwise, we should be rolling into Sedona by 8:45.

Soldier's Pass is a very thin trail, if we have interest after lunch we may try to break into small groups and run it.
