Title: Backway to Crown King - Aug. 29th
Post by: Brannick on August 08, 2015, 10:35:28 PM
I'll be heading out with a few friends Aug. 29th to do the Crown King run. Haven't done it yet and I've been trying to go for a while but things keep coming up.

If anyone is interested to join, you're more than welcome. Still not 100% on roll out time or meet up.

If there is a gas station at the 1-17 exit we could meet there at a certain time.

I'll post once the details are 100%

There is a gas station with a McDonald's next to it right east of the 17 at the carefree hwy exit,  that's where we usually meet up when we do a Crown King run.

They have graded most of the trail up to the town, so you can go around most obstacles. However, there are still dangerous cliffs and places where you can (as others have) die. Stay alert, it's a long trail especially for noobs. Respect the mountain.

Especially on a Sat!
I wish I could join but will be house sitting :(

I have done that run 3 times so far this year and every time was totally different.   This last time was super rough,  really sandy in spots and a lot of the road had been washed so a lot of rock and boulder navigation.   Super fun still,  wish I could go but can't.  Have fun.

This may work for me. My wife has not done it and was just saying that she wanted to see the town.

We are meeting at the Chevron at I-17 and the 74 at 7:30 and trying to roll out as soon as everyone is there. Hopefully before 7:45 but definitely before 8.

Alright guys. I have some news that we need to figure out.

I work with a Jeeper and he tells me that the Saturday that we are doing this run is also the same day as an anniversary run held by the Jeep guys. I've been told 120+ rigs are attending. First group is leaving the starting point at 6am and then each group leaves in 30 min intervals. So that puts 120+ rigs leaving 30 min apart in groups of less than 10. Last group should leave the starting point at 11am.

Its gonna be a bitch to squeeze in with these guys. And if we do make the trip Crown king is going to be crazy busy. If we left after the last group we could get to CK around late afternoon. That is if the jeeps don't break down on the trail.

So I guess we need to do some recon. Anyone that has an in with other clubs or knows someone in a jeep club. We need info.

I only know one guy with a jeep but he is a poser so not much trail driving.  My thoughts are that perhaps we postpone till another day.  120+ of anything is a lot on a trail like that.

I think a reschedule works best for me. I have to be back in town early for a race.

I was there last year when they did this, and didn't know it was happening until I showed up.. I squeezed in between the 1st and 2nd groups (there were three). They kept it moving pretty good, only a couple of breaks on the way. They were a nice group, and only had nice things to say  for the lone Nissan. There were a few "holy crap, did you see the Nissan take that line?" or "Wow, I have a new respect for Xterras. Didn't know they could do that.." comments too.  ;D Town was crowding up pretty good by the time we hit top, so we bugged out quick and got down the hill before the traffic jam started. Oh, they gave me an official CK jeep ride (15th anniv) sticker too..

You guys ever get up the hill? This recent weather (IMO) is the best time to go. Start off in dirt and rocks w/ blue skys, make your way up to the top through blinding rain and wind, and you might find yourself in a snowstorm at the top.. Epic trail and inclemment weather only makes it better.

If you do go up the backroad to CK when wet, just be careful of the soft edges.  There are a few spots where you could easily have a bad day if the rain softened clay gives way.

From what I have been told the snow trips are the most challenging. My old club did a run every year in the snow but I was told lockers are recommended. The views must be amazing as you climb to the top covered in snow.
