Title: AZXC 2016 Kickoff Run Planning Thread
Post by: PitSnipe (Kyle) on November 21, 2015, 03:55:40 PM
Like the title says. This is the planning thread for the annual AZXC Kickoff Run. The last three years we have run Crown King. Before that AZXC would run a different trail each year. Hammer, Pinchel, and I have decided to get back onto running different trails. So this is where you chime in and recommend a trail to run. We will then have a poll and choose which trail will be the 2016 Kickoff Run trail. We also will need to discuss a date that will work for most of us. So lets hear what ya got.

Trail Suggestions

~Broken Arrow, Soldiers Pass with an over night camp at the top of Schnebly Hill
~Coke Ovens via South Box Canyon with an over night camp at Cochran
~Chivo Falls Tucson

Something with camp. I'll let the more experienced guys/gals suggest a trail.

We didn't make it that far last time down there, but I thought the coke ovens were closed off.

Isn't Broken Arrow 4x4 only, and the trail is tight correct; so limited # of attendees?

Yes, BA is 4wd only. As for limited, if you've got 18-20 trucks, it'd be a good idea to split them in two sets, but not imperative. More of a courtesy to others on the trail.. As for a suggestion, I'm going to throw Desoto Mine in. Lots of climbing, tippy spots, some boulders. I remember it as being a good challenge on a long day. http://azoffroad.net/desoto-mine-trail/4541336276 (http://azoffroad.net/desoto-mine-trail/4541336276)

According to Chuy, they are 'closed' off but accessible. I guess we should go check it out.

Im not sure if I used the correct term but they were on private property at one time. The articles are old and I have seen dozens of people and clubs at them over the years. I have actually never seen a sign there or anything resembling a gate.

Here is a link to some old references of being closed off.

"Note: The coke ovens are on private property and should not be visited without permission from the owner."

"Important update: Although much of the trail remains open, access to the actual Coke Ovens has been closed off."

I'm definitely interested in the kick off run. I'm only 2x4 without a locker though. I'd like to be able to tag along but, I don't want to try and push my rig through something it can't handle. I have 2.5" lift radflos, spc ucas already installed. So height restrictions shouldn't be a problem. Can we find some middle ground?

Some cool 2WD friendly trails with a camp would be:

Bloody Basin to 7 Springs or reverse with a camp at Tangle Creek. 4WD seekers can loop back through Sheeps Bridge 2WD can loop back through 7 springs.

Schnebly Hill to the I-17 camp in the middle at the top of Schnebly Hill

Florence Kelvin HW loop to Cochran and Back Out, possible overnight camp near Cochran, and possibility to cross and do the Coke Ovens if the river is low at night or afternoon. 2WD Stay at base camp or ride along for the afternoon run, with other 2WD trail possibilities near by.

Devils Canyon/Hackberry Creek/ Crater tanks, with 5 mile death hike (not kid or dog friendly) amazing hike and views semi improved camp grounds at Oak Flats area. Other possible 4x4 trails nearby for the adventurers.

Lynx Lake area base camp at dispersed camp site, 2WD friendly Bannie Mine Rd. Day Run loop

Mt. Lemon mountain cruise, possible camp on the mountain all 2WD

Lynx Lake just below is Lynx creek if anybody has ever gone gold panning good place to practice all just south of Prescott.

I like the Table Mesa idea, or Four Peaks area works as well.  I like the camp idea, but Mt. Lemon this time of year, too cold for me.

table mesa would be fun. They have an area designated for camping just NW of the shooting area

If no consideration of the Desoto mine trail is being given, I say this is the second best option-
"Bloody Basin to 7 Springs or reverse with a camp at Tangle Creek. 4WD seekers can loop back through Sheeps Bridge"

I love the idea of setting up a base camp at the end of the trail if possible so we can have a big camp cookout.

What's the Date for this run?  If it's Jan 2nd, I could be talked into bringing the X out to AZ in 2 weeks and wheeling before I head back to Raleigh, NC...
