Title: February Xcursion - FOUR PEAKS CLEAN UP, Feb 6th
Post by: Onix on December 07, 2009, 10:37:41 AM
The clean up is in the planning stages for the third Four Peaks Pickup. This coming year the event will be held on February 6th 2010.

I want to say thank you to the more than 500 volunteers that showed up last year. With almost no monetary backing the cleanup was able to take 21 TONS of trash out of the desert near Phoenix, AZ.
Thank you for all of your hard work!

Get your official "Four Peaks Pickup" stickers here: http://www.sierraexpeditions.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=982
We also have a "Paypal" donation link set up here. Every little bit helps us cover the costs of the cleanup from a free lunch for the volunteers to the trash bags we use. Thank you!

Great post Wally.  The 4 Peaks Cleanup will be held on Saturday, February 6th, 2010 from 9am-3pm.  For those of you that haven't been, this is a great event that draws hundreds of volunteers from many 4x4 clubs as well as ATV / UTV / and dirtbike clubs.  Last year, we collected over 20 tons of trash!!!  It is a fun time, and they feed us after we are done.

After last year's event, AZXC talked about possibly "sponsoring" the event - at least donating some money to help offset some of the costs (trashbags, signs, food, etc, etc.).  I will definitely make a donation to the cause, but it would be cool to pool our money together and make a presentation to Tim Huber (the event organizer) on behalf of AZXC.  What do you guys (and girls) think about this idea?

Thanks Wally! I saw the alert on my phone but cannot view it on my work computer.

February 6th, huh? Sounds good to me! We should definitely donate something as a club - either cash, supplies, or food. I'll drop a line to Tim, great idea Ted.  8) Since we will have been a part of this for 3 years now, let's make sure all the Jeepers know us so-called 'mall crawler SUV's' help out the casue too.  :P

I will be there, will bring some plastic cans to help keep the trash bags open while picking up the garbage. Helps speed the process up when you dont have to fight your trash bag to put trash in it.

Think of the treasures we will find this year.

At this coming meeting I will be offering up for raffle a certificate good for $100 off any of my products.
www.xoskel.com  just did some major updating to the site, still doing some tonight so if you have been there its bigger now.

I hope this is enough of a forewarning to get people to bring a few bucks for the raffle.

Bringing a Bumper Mouth Bracket for a separate raffle also, it only fits 2005 through 2008 but if you win it you can always sell it on internets, it is after all new in the box.

All proceeds to go to Fourpeaks Cleanup sponsorship.

I can not donate any money for this cause myself, I just do not have any.

The event organizer - Tim Huber (SOAZ), has recently signed up on AZXC, and now that his AZXC logon ID has been approved, he should be able to give us additional information about the cleanup.

Thanks Ted!  ;)

The straight info: this year has been "different" than previous. Most contacts at agencies or companies that donated to the cleanup in 08 and 09 are laid off, fired, retired etc.
It's not all bad though. It just means I'm focusing on what's important: Trash bags, dumpsters, water, lunch and LOTS of new friends picking up trash.

I'm making a big push for all sorts of items from Press to sponsors in these last few weeks.

Tim, thanks for sending the flyer.  I sent an e-mail out, with flyer attached to many of my colleagues many of whom are interested in coming out.  I also sent this to the President of my HOA, and good friend of mine who will be sending this out to our community, via posting on the website and via e-mail blast, and to his coworkers as well. He said it would be around 1000 people that he will be sending this too. Even if a hand full of individuals show up it will bring the awareness that we are there to help the land not tear it up.

See you at the event!!

Moderators, should we move this thread under the Official Xcursions for February?

Also, if there are any west siders taking the 10 out and want to meet somewhere too, let me know.

In the past, we've had everyone meet at the Baja/Conoco Gas Station on the east side of SR-87 just opposite the Ft McDowell Casino (just a little bit north of the instersection of SR-87 / Shea).  I think we should meet there at 8:00am, so we can all convoy to the cleanup.

Historically, we try to get to the cleanup check-in point by 8:30, so we can sign in and get to our spot before the crowds start showing up.

Count me in!  I usually take Frank Lloyd to shea to the beeline from the NW side, so across from the casino or at Shea and the beeline sounds good.  Careful PV have a bit of a speed trap about a mile before the beeline, speed drops about 10 mph from the rest of shea (west).   >:(

Sounds great, Ted, we'll see ya there just a few before 8am for coffee and then roll out at 8.

Godsmack: If the drive is hard being that early, then come later... if you roll in at noon if you like, I'm sure that there will still be plenty to do. Whatever you offer, it will be appreciated by all!
There is sketchy cell service up there, so you'll have to either call on CB, Ham, or just drive around and look for us when you get there. :-)

I will be there, at the meeting place at 8.

I will be bringing a plastic trash can to aid filling up the trash bags.
Learned last year that holding a plastic bag and trying to put the kind of trash found out in the desert into them while the wind blows is just a PITA.
Bring a plastic trash can and line it with your trash bag, you can toss debrin in and fill the bag up much faster and easier.
Just a recommendation.

Awesome Tim!!!  I'm getting pumped for this year's cleanup.  I'm bringing my trailer and a bunch of bags.  Our group is ready for the challenge - give us your worst site - we can do it!!!

I'd like to recognize and give thanks to our brothers and sisters at SWANKy (SouthWest Area Nissan Klub yota) and ONAZ (Offroad Nissans of AZ) - this will be the third year that they have joined us in the cleanup efforts at 4 Peaks.

A great day indeed!!!  Special thanks to everyone who made it out to the cleanup today.  I think I counted 18 trucks with AZXC, SWANKy, and ONAZ well represented.  As a group, we donated $135 to the cleanup effort, and I know many of you also bought shirts, stickers, etc.  Thanks again to all who donated their time and/or money to a really great cause.

BTW, I talked to Tim Huber at the end of the cleanup, and he said there were at least 400 people this year, but they haven't done the final count.  All four very large rolloff dumpsters were filled to the top.

My little magnet invention worked great too.   I don't know why at least some of you aren't going to come out to a few days of AZ Run X.  Camp is 2WD friendly and is right at the start of box canyon.  Consider this a personal invitation to at least the party (ok every night is a party but....) on Friday the 19th...

The trailer was a great idea! I know it might have been a pain for Ted to haul it home after, but it was fully utilized and most appreciated. Especially being in our “Special Spot” way back, across the river. It’s so hard for me to believe that we filled it… Thanks Ted!!!

And the gloves! I brought my comfie Machanix gloves to use, but ended up using the leather gloves donated by Cycle Gear. Boy was that a nice donation!  I got them really dirty, soupy and thorny by picking up wet soda cans in the bushes, digging glass bottles from the moist fire pits and picking up junk. I really appreciated this because I didn’t know how hard I was going to be on the gloves and I didn’t have to ruin my Machanix. So I will now keep both sets of gloves side by side hanging from my rack, ready to go.

It was great watching Stone get stuck in the river… and watching him get out and tip toe around the front of his truck to lock the hubs. And then zip on out of there. Thanks for coming out Stone!
And what was even funnier was finding a two wheel drive Ford Exploder bogged down in the middle of the river, watching him tip two around his truck… scratching his head. Ya, we towed him out… and then advised him to by an Xterra.

And the last bit of excitement… there was 5 of us trucks pulled over on the side of the dirt road, geocaching after the trash pick up…and racing on by was a white Chevy truck… and then more truck racing by, chasing it. Then on the Ham radio, we hear people calling out for help… “We have no cell service and we need the Sheriff, can someone assist?” The requester relayed the situation to someone back at Base Camp that got 911 on the phone, “We cornered a stolen truck… the owner identified his own stolen truck… we got him boxed in.” As we continued on down the road looking for more geocaches, I see commotion going on with a group of trucks in front of us… it was there was it was all going down. So we hung out a bit, listening to the Ham radio and hearing the story unfold. I guess this modified Chevy… with off road club stickers, was stolen back in October. The owner was out working the trash pick up and just all of the sudden sees his truck rolling on down the road… club stickers and all. In the end, the Sheriff made it out there and we were tired of watching. But it was all because of Ham radio and its operators…

What a wonderful day! Thanks to Tim Hurber and to all of you!

THANK YOU!!!! You guys rock! thanks in large part to your donation we'll be able to write a nice CHECK to Tread Lightly!!

Is it just me or does it seem like every one of your trucks is pretty built and good looking?! Jeez, making me feel bad.

It was a crazy day! After adding up all of the families that signed on one line, the folks down at Bush highway where the Forest Service dumpster was and conservatively estimating 30 or so people didn't sign in. We are just under 500 people again!
The great part is that so far the TRASH number are looking to be more than last year. How we find over 20 tons two years in a row is amazing.
When the final 2 dumpsters get dropped off I'll post up some hard totals.

Thank you guys. You are a great club, very organized and I'd buy you all a beer... if I could afford it.
