Title: Tangle Creek Camp and Kick off run Jan 23rd
Post by: Hammer (Avi) on December 27, 2015, 10:15:48 PM
This is the final planning thread for this years Kick Off Run.
*Please check this thread post often, I will be updating this post with meetup locations and times, as well as details on the run. This post will have the most pertinent compiled information for our event.*

If you can not make the meet time at 10am. That's fine. Please join us at the campsite for our cookout. Just bring something to share and maybe some firewood.

We will adjust the trail based on actual attendees, and trail obstacles. This will likely be a long day, especially if you are driving out and camping. It will take any where from 2 to 3 hours to get to the camp, and then another hour to get to Sheeps Bridge, at which point we will turn around and make camp. So at minimum, 4 hours of driving on the forest roads. Depending on the actual time that we get back to camp for the night, there should be time to hang out with day light.

You can download a pdf from the link at the bottom of this post.

Meet Time at Trailhead: 10:00am on Saturday 23, 2016
Trailhead: 34.282853,-112.118581 This is just off the I17, heading east off Exit 259. This road is our trail, Bloody Basin Road which turns into Forest Service Road 269. For the most part it is a maintained Forest Service road. It can be accomplished by 2WD vehicles with some clearance. For those of you who have attended the Fat Tire event, expect it to be something like that.

Meeting at Carefree: 9:00am at Chevron next to McDonalds to convoy up to the trailhead, make sure to fuel up before the trail!

Overnight Campsite: We will set up camp here 3408'28.9"N 11147'30.0"W and this is where will have our potluck cookout. If you can not attend. Please allow time to rest, and plan for driving in the dark if you are heading back out.

Here is the general area that is near the campsite, this is a well signed and maintained area (34.155943, -111.821740). This is a main intersection where the campsite area is if you are coming from the West or the South.

Please list if you will be attending, if you will be camping either Friday or Saturday night, and if you would like to participate in a potluck Saturday after the run.  If you will be participating please post what you would like to bring and number of people you'll be bringing.

Also, if you will be hanging out with us at the campsite after the trail for the potluck or just to rest up a bit, please plan on bringing some firewood.

Also, for anyone who is camping the night before at the campsite, they would have to travel all the way west in the morning, since that will be our trail starting point. This is a long trail, and travelling in a group, the bigger the group the longer the trail time. So plan to allow more time to meet at the trailhead, or at the least somewhere on the trail.

We won't know the weather conditions until that week, but there are plenty of washes that can get flooded pretty quick in the case of rain. We do not recommend anyone to attempt crossing them, especially at night. Other than that, the night temps in Arizona are chilly as it is, there is some elevation that might allow for frost or slight freezing conditions so be prepared if there is a drop in temperature.

We're all looking forward to this run as it should be a lot of fun, not a stressful trail at all, and as close as it is to Phoenix I expect a lot of attendance.

I plan to attend, maybe one or two guests. Will this be a kid friendly event for the camp out or an adults only type of camp? What are the Friday camp/trail plans?

X2 on bringing in wood there isn't much stuff around to burn and mostly everything is alive and standing in that area. On our last trip we burned about 5 bags of wood from the local gas station in one night.

Its a nice long flat dispersed camp area. The pictures are from October this year.

I would be up for a pre-run of the trail too.

I have a couple card tables I can bring along with some propane.

All AZXC events are kid friendly, although I have a habit of bringing adult beverages to pass around the camp fire.  I'd love to be on the trail by 10, but I need to map out a path for us.  Chuy could you send me GPS coordinates for that camping spot? It  looks perfect.

I will make some carne and pollo asada tacos, and probably a few other things. A couple of gas grills really speeds up the cooking times but I'm use to cooking over the fire too.

If anyone plans to cross the river at Sheeps Bridge here is a short video from our last trip so you can get an idea of how deep it is.

I'm going to put myself down for camping both nights. Hopefully I can get the GF to come along.
Any info about the camp site? Facilities present, access to water, proximity to the main road/trail? Any current burn restrictions in place?

Potluck is Saturday night. For everyone camping Friday, how do we want to handle dinner and breakfast? Individual or group?

No facilities, its in the middle of nowhere where near the T junction where Bloody Basin Rd, and CaveCreek Rd. intersect. Its pretty much one big open camp site. The creek was running last time I was there but it wasn't flowing like the river at Sheeps Bridge. I always bring my own water and facilities.

I'm up for a group or community breakfast and dinner. Just let me know who's cooking and what to bring.

The AZXC leadership would love for everyone, to join us on the trail and then hangout afterwards for a group camp cookout. You are welcome to stay for the cookout and leave, or spend the night in the desert with us. Breakfast in the morning is likely but there is no current plan. I imagine some of us may or may not be in a hurry to get home.

The hope for this years kickoff run is that everyone brings something to share or add to the event for the cookout. You are not required to bring anything to attend this event. We will post items you are bringing in the original post.

AZXC will do our best to make sure we have the essentials for preparing and serving food. I was thinking we could set up an start/end camp if possible so those who do not want to go on the trail can just enjoy the campsite. If you have a canopy to setup that would help, for sure bring chairs, if you have any dietary needs, be sure to bring them.

We will nominate a cook on the trail...

Sounds good. I think one is enough, I don't have one. I think Avi has one. It's good to have for a roof over our heads for food prep.

Ok, I did a pre-run for the back way to the campsite and updated the geo coordinates in the original post for the actual campsite area. It's very open, and unless there is another large group camping that night there is plenty of space for many of us. There is a smaller area before this one but it isn't very big for our size group. There is a stream but it is currently not running by the site. It is upstream a bit just barely.

Super excited. I'm waking up early and coming down from Prescott to do the Saturday run, then driving back up north later that day. Sounds like y'all have campfire food covered pretty well. I can bring some cases of water and soda or energy drinks... I might need those. That way nothing goes bad on my drive down.

We can always use more firewood. Of course, assuming there are no fire restrictions that weekend we'll probably need it with the lower temps.

I think it will be better to recommend everyone bring some firewood especially if we cant camp out together and have to split up if campsites are occupied.
For the AZXC is it ok if i have my brother and his boy contribute to the potluck and camp out saturday only. since he does not own a nissan and his 4x4 vehicle isnt as capable?

Rob how cold do you think it was? Did you end up coming out through Bloody Basin road, any snow on the ground?

thupertrooper,

We do recommend that if anyone is coming to the campsite at all, to please bring firewood, regardless of camping overnight or not. It's not required, but it helps us enjoy the evening together comfortably. There is really only one campsite and it is plenty big for a large group. I would be surprised if it is occupied at all that weekend. Chuy posted pictures in this thread of a site with fire pit, that is the campsite. There is a smaller campsite just north of this larger site but it's small and I'd expect that anyone going out there alone would camp there as it is more private.

As far as your question about contributing, I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but the more contributions the merrier. As an AZXC  coordinated effort, we are only camping Saturday night. There are some members who have mentioned camping Friday night, we aren't coordinating that. If you invited a non-member who is driving the trail please post a name and their vehicle. We do want to keep it minimized to AZXC Nissan club members or at the least potential members.

*Always check the original post for our events as that will have the most pertinent info compiled into one post. This is where your questions will likely have already been answered.

Chuy,

I only went up and down FR24 to check out the campsite. We didn't go west. No idea of condition of the Bloody Basin Road. I think a few us are planning an impromptu pre-run. No details on that. As far as the area I was at, on FR24 there was some iced up water on the higher elevations during the day, which was in the shade. It was a nice temp at the campsite around 3pm, and we were at the trailhead near Carefree around 5pm and still decent temp, but it was rather warm that day compared to the previous weeks.

No snow. The campsite was very undisturbed, maybe some fresh tracks but no recent campers.

I will have a +1 riding with me. Also I hope my SPC ball joints come in. Ordered them last week through Nisstec got an unexpected call from them saying SPC cm out with a new greasable bj but put the wrong boot on so now its all a waiting game. My truck will not be driven until I get them on. I ran the risk of driving to work today but the duking noise is getting worse.

Sorry guys but I don't think I'll be able to make this one either... the monster truck is still under the knife And still needs some testing before taking it out for an event.  With the baby coming next week I just don't think I'll have time to finish it.  Make sure you guys get lots of pics and good video of this event ..Thanks

We haven't set an official meet/start time yet, but it will likely be early enough so that we can give everyone ample time to drive on the trail with ample day light.

As far as the trail run, we are planning to run from I-17 to the campsite, depending on the time when we arrive near Tangle Creek, we'll either set up camp or keep running to the Sheeps Bridge area, and then go back to the campsite. If everyone was camping, this would be more likely to happen.

Keep in mind, that the campsite area is a good 2 hours north of a city road with no one in front of you. Maybe less, depending on how fast you can run it. Also, as it does get dark early, and there is a chance that if you plan to head down south from the Tangle Creek area that you might be doing so in the dark. This is the quickest way back to civilization from the camp area that we have chosen.

It turns out I have a prior commitment on the 23rd that I either forgot about, or hoped would fall through (thus forgetting about it). I will, however, come up that evening anyway for campfire festivities and dinner. It sounds as though almost all the food is covered, so I can bring up a sizable amount of firewood. After the Broken Arrow run, I think I understand just how much this club likes their fires. I can also bring anything else anyone thinks of at the last minute; I'll check this thread before heading up.

How many people are camping out that friday night?
I was planning to camp friday but it doesn't make sense to drive to the meet up spot on 1-17 and then drive way back through the campsite. Correct me if im wrong but could we just leave from the campsite as the club is passing? I guess if alot of the club is camping friday it wouldn't be as boring driving back and forth lol
I understand the friday isnt part of the planned event but just wondering.

Thanks guys

I was thinking this same thing after I saw the actual camp site location, so I was thinking of a camp/big fire at lake pleasant down the road friday night with a convoy to the meet up spot on i17 Saturday morning.

I was planning to camp friday but it doesn't make sense to drive to the meet up spot on 1-17 and then drive way back through the campsite.

I think its a good idea for some people to head up Friday to secure the spot. There is a fair chance it may be occupied if no one does. There aren't very many places to camp at in the area, and The Tangle Creek Riparian area is by far the largest and best.

With a projected group this large and the start time. I guestimate that we won't make it to the camp spot until the afternoon sometime, unless we are racing without any stops. I imagine people would prefer to setup and start cooking before the sunsets at 6pm. Im not even factoring in possible issues like a flat tire or mechanical break down that could occur since the probability always increases with more vehicles.

I have driven those trails and camped in that area before from all directions. The posted plan seems pretty well thought out and makes sense in my opinion.

I have never been up there during the winter but here is a picture of Bloody Basin road during spring break a couple of years ago. I think it was about 80 or 90 degrees in the valley that day. It took me by surprise and easily added much more time to the drive.

There has been a lot of discussion about this among the leadership.  It will come down to who wants to camp, and what they would like to do.  But there are several options, they can just head west when they like and meet the group mid way, or wait till the group passes and join up.  A third option would be to meet at a point of interest such as the stone cabin off 578.  Does anyone else attending have a Ham license, there is a Mt. Ord repeater that should provide good com for the area.

I'll be bringing firewood but I won't stay long since I'll have a rider and don't know what his schedule is going to be like that night. But how easy is it going to be to get back to the 17 from the camp spot

It is a long but easy trail to the 17 or down carefree to get out.

My suggestion, would be to those who want to camp out Friday, is that they go secure that campsite for our group. Just a suggestion. In the morning they could catch the others on cb channel 17 heading east from the I-17 starting point. If I didn't have to work Friday night, I would be doing that. Of course, you don't have to do that.

I plan on going friday night, if I have to drive back out to meet up with everyone on Saturday morning its not a big deal. Cordes gas station is only 3 miles N of the meet location. Although the distance from the camp site is 2 hours but its only 29 miles and I assume grated roads.

I am debating driving up Friday NIGHT. Leave Tucson at 3:30, get there in 4-4.5 hours.

Google maps says going through carefree and taking Cave Creek/Seven Springs is 30 minutes faster than I-17?

Any thoughts?

3 coordinates -  The trailhead sat morning, the intersection of the two trails for reference for those coming from the south, and then the actual campsite

I'm not a fan of burning pallet wood or any industrial wood in a camp fire where smores for kids might be made. The reason being is that nails are almost always left behind and poisonous smoke is released. I know not all pallets are chemically treated by why take the chance to save a few bucks?

I had an awesome time at the event.  I want to thank everyone who cooked, brought firewood, or helped another AZXC member off the trail.  Also, to the Board Members who helped to organize and run the trial, you all did a great job, and you made this event a joy to be at and to be a part of!
