Title: AZXC Cookoff Planning!
Post by: pinchel (Rob) on February 10, 2016, 05:35:51 PM
All right let's do this! Share your thoughts, this used to be a regular event but participation dwindled. So I updated the thread title to general cookoff, perhaps we can generate interest for other food choices. This is to be an event separate from camping or trail runs, just a get together of food pleasure.

I think the main questions will be:

How many want to participate in making chili? How many will attend? Location? Spring or Fall?

So let's see who'd want to participate, and no your chili doesn't have to already be award winning. Just another reason to eat, drink and be merry.

I'll start with quick survey.

Sounds like a good time, I would be in for this. Will this be an off-road or camping event?

Any excuse for me to take Molly off-roading and camping, and I am in!

I think typically it has been a hosted event at a local park or someone's home.

I think it'd be cool to make it an Offroad adventure and to have to cook the chili on an open fire! Haha

I think thus requires quite a bit of gear than most people want to bring on an excursion. Typically requires crockpots. I mean we can plan a food based excursion no problem. I think we'd like this to be more about the gathering than the trip to get there.

I'm thinking no Later than mArch, it's already hitting 90 degrees in the valley and that means come May not many people wanna be eatin' potentially spicey food outside in 100 degree heat...

When this was begun, it was meant to be a gathering of multiple off-road clubs (Toyotas, Jeeps, etc) to meet others whom we'd see on the trails, have a raffle, build camaraderie, and eat good chili. It's usually in a park, more of a "show and shine" meeting. I'd be more apt to show up to say Encanto park w/ my family for a day to meet and talk w/ other offroaders while preparing/eating chili than trucking that stuff into the desert to set up.. My $.02<-- There it is.

Unfortunately, my wife no longer wants to move back to AZ, as NC is now our home, so I'll only be out there twice a year at best from now on.  Still staying active here because I can't wait to get out there and go wheeling with everyone in May.  Pretty much every day after work will be mountain biking, then probably heading over to butcher jones to get in some wheeling after work, which ends at 2PM AZT, and wheeling and MTB every weekend.  I'll be there about 3 weeks.

The family and I are down for whatever and wherever just need a firm date, so I can skip those pesky family weekend weddings, graduations, quinceañeras, birthdays, baptisms etc. Please, any day other than March 5th UFC 196.

My chili requires quite a bit of time to cook and is best done at home, then transported to the park where I can add the final touches and bring it all together in another hour or so of cooking. Can't bring chili off-road unless I want that chili car smell that's not an option at the carwash... lol

March is the month that I remember it being done most, I participated for several years before being inactive. (I won't mention who won.. :)

Always a good time to hang out and eat good chili with friends and I'll check back to see what was decided and how you're going about it and if I can make it.

Thanks!

I have the 5th and 19th off of March.  If we do the chili cook off on the 19th, or another date, I may throw together an impromptu run on the 5th.

So looks look March is busy. I know that there is a chili cook off in Tukee this Month. Maybe we can plan to enter that as a team every year,or any similar.
In the mean time we will plan this for a older month hence forth.

I like the idea of doing this in September-October time frame.

I agree, let's see if we can put something together for Sept or Oct.

Here's another thought. We caravan as a group to an already on going Chili Cookoff and attend or also contribute.

For example, October 8th there is one in Crown King. They gave me a flyer from last year. I don't expect the prices to change. If you bring 2 gallons of chili entry fee is waived, entry fee is $20 which includes you eating chili. Flyer is attached below.

There are also a couple supporting Fire Departments in October, I do not have enough details about those yet but they are in Tucson and in Prescott areas.

My thought is that if they are on the weekend we can make an excursion out of it.

Looks like the one in Prescott was cancelled for this year. Bummer. So that leaves Crown King and Tucson. If you guys find one that would be good for the group please post up here. We're shooting for something in September or October or both if we aren't too busy.

Looks like Crown King and Tucson still. I'm thinking we do Crown King on October 8th, because Tucson may be too far for many and although it may not be as chaotic, they have yet to post much information regarding participation.

I do too, but the problem is, as you can probably tell, it's harder to plan. We get fewer participants when it's not easy in and easy out. We and do both but then the campout might just end up being a handful of campers eating chili for 24 hours and then gassing it up in the woods. Lol

This is what we look forward too!

Btw, I can host a chili get together at my house if there is any interest...

When is the balloon festival? This thread isn't date specific, this was the original thread from months ago to get ideas in regards to planning a chili cookoff. Still in the works. Normally its in March.

I reset the polll, it's a new year! This is a poll for the possible planning of a food cookoff. Separate from camping or any other excursion, just a gathering of eaters and cookers or chefs or what have you. It would be a bit of a competition, and a prize or prizes to be awarded for participants.

I also think to be fair, a small monetary donation to help cover costs of the participants, nothing extravagant.

Let's hear your  thoughts on this new and improved idea.

I think this is a great idea. Maybe we could even do catagories. Entre, appetizer, and desert. I think a park would be a great location for an event like this.
