Title: 2016 Fat Tire Run Event 8/5 - 8/7
Post by: pinchel (Rob) on February 23, 2016, 11:22:25 AM
Are you ready yet?! A week away! Get prepped! If you can't make it or if you can please post up and keep us updated. Thank you!

NEW! We have an event decal to hand out too! Provided by our Supporting Vendor - Vinyltats (http://www.azxterraclub.com/forum/index.php?board=65.0)

When:  Aug 5th - Aug 7th
Where:   Flagstaff / Grand Canyon
What:  61 mile mountain bike ride from Flagstaff to the Grand Canyon
Charity: This ride raises money for the Marine League Charities (aka Toys for Tots, Wounded Marines, etc).
Our Role: We provide on-course support for the riders.  If they break down and/or can't continue, we will shuttle them to the next SAG (Stop And Group) stop.

We typically get up to Flag on Friday afternoon / evening and camp at "Start Camp". !!!***Start Camp for us will be somewhere different this year, location posted below. ****!!!

On Saturday, we are up early, before the riders start which is 7am, and drive out to our assigned spots on the trail. We are on parked on the trail for a good portion of the day (bring your own lunch, water, snacks, shade). On Saturday, late afternoon, we make it to the finish line just outside of the Grand Canyon (aka "End Camp"). At End Camp, the Marines cook a big fajita dinner, and Fat Tire donates the beer. After dinner, we have a big bonfire, and goldfish (the crackers) massacre! On Sunday morning, the Marines cook up a big breakfast, and then we break camp to head for home.

This is a great event, and one that I try to make every year.  We can always use more trucks on the trail, but let's try to keep it Nissans only (i.e. don't post this on a non-Nissan board). That being said, if you have a buddy with another make of high clearance or 4wd vehicle, they would be welcome to join us.

Here is a link to the Fat Tire event website:  http://flag2gc.com/ (http://flag2gc.com/)

Let's make this an even greater year for Nissans at Fat Tire!

Start Camp location for us will be here -> https://goo.gl/maps/8mmSxYRA8aS2 , it is near the 1st checkpoint. Here are the coordinates - (35.394806, -111.755306). It is not far from the 180.

Try to get to our Start Camp as early as possible on Friday, we will be handing out maps and sharing pertinent info. We will need to be ready to roll pretty early as the riders start riding at 7am and they are much much closer to the checkpoints, which gives us less lag time to get there. We all need to be at designated checkpoints before the riders get there. And for you noobs, there are riders that can beat us to checkpoints.

We are down to 10 rigs to cover 10 checkpoints. Once we arrive, and we have an ACTUAL number, we can assign checkpoints with buddies if possible. There will be a few checkpoints this year that will have HAM operators so if we have to we can buddy up with them.

Otherwise, we're there to ensure the safety of the riders so we'll need to cover the checkpoints. If you know anyone who has a high clearance vehicle or 4wd invite the to come along with you.

NO!! Easy killer

I wish I could make more events but this year has been nuts. Get ready pit 2018 is going to knock you socks off. Take any offer to get back to school or be proactive and ask to go to school just an FYI. I was in Germany last week and what they plan on launching is nuts.

I think last year was a record turn out, so it is hard to live up to that year after year.  That said, I do think there are at least a couple more trying to make it.

This is Marshall's event so I would hope he will attend. As far as Ted, I have not seen any action from him in a while.

My friends that have come with me with their rigs in the past will not be joining me this year. Unless one of them decides to ride with me, but I don't think that is gonna happen. My daughter has decided she wants to join me.

If anyone else is coming and bringing a young one on the trail, let me know. If possible we can buddy up at a checkpoint. Depends on how many rigs we end up having.

***Update***

I have received some info from Marshall and I will post an updated camp location. Riders are starting somewhere different this year. We'll be camping close to the first checkpoint. This will make it easier for us to get started. Keep in mind we need to be up at on our way to the check points before 7am start time. The sooner the better.

Marshall and Travis don't count in our group. They are covering past sag1 and or clean-up. I assume you are in our group, and we'll be covering checkpoints beginni from the riders start, and up to sag1.

For confirmation: we're on our own for Friday dinner, Saturday breakfast, and Saturday lunch? I know Saturday can easily be handled with snacks  :P

Yes, food is always on my mind.

Can we pitch tents, or do we need to camp in our trucks?

Yes mud is expected, some of the Ham volunteers even bailed due to conditions.  Should be fun for us, but try not to destroy the road for the riders.  We were discussing Saturday food as well, trying to avoid bringing cooking gear so we may be stuck with cold food.

Tents for sure for Saturday night, Friday night plan for a quick exit on Saturday morning. I would not expect to camp during the day you may need to move in a hurry. I'd have some sort of shade if possible.

I don't have an exact time but it will be after I get the kids home from school which will be about 130pm. I live in Ahwatukee so even if I leave right 130 from my house I'd be at the regular meeting spot up north by 230-3pm. You guys are much closer to that area.

Anyone who can or wants to meet plan to be at the McDonalds/Gas on Carefree Hwy & I17.
