Post by: Hammer (Avi) on March 16, 2016, 04:29:55 AM
The date has been decided, I look forward to this event every year.
Please post if you will be attending, we can get a camping thread going if people are interested in camping this year as well.

Will update with meeting locations, based on group size we may need to break into two or more groups.

Time:10AM at Trail Head Here  (https://www.google.com/maps/place/Broken+Arrow+Trail/@34.8455931,-111.7576403,16z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0x743d9692b5bb848a)

Just curious, this run only takes like 25-35 minutes maybe, so I guess with this big of a group, max of an hour. Is Broken Arrow the only run we plan on doing? I have done this twice in the last few weeks, and it is far from difficult or long. Just wanted to get a feeler out to see what the plan was.

If you run BA in 25-30 minutes, you're doing it wrong.

This is the Pink Jeep tour that goes to Chicken Point and Devil's Staircase, right? I suppose the Devils Staircase added another 20-30 minutes maybe, and with Jeep traffic it may be worse.

lolz, I've never been on a PJ tour. Is that how fast they rail 'em through there?
I've never spent less than 1.5  hours, or more than 3 on BA.. Picture stops, obstacles and daring do, maybe lunch.
Why the F would I drive from PHX to cover a trail in 25 minutes? Pphht.

You seem to have an interesting perspective and extremely defensive, so I'll just choose to ask someone else. I couldn't care less if you have done a pink jeep tour, the question remained if that was the same trail they take pink jeep tours. Have a good one.

My apology if you were offended. I've run BA dozens of times, and just don't imagine ever going through that quickly. You, have a good day too.

Weather should be awesome, are we going to do a trail lunch or group restaurant lunch? We can hit up Soldiers Pass, and Schnebly Hill Rd. The last time I ran this trail with a group of 15 we did all three and a trail lunch, then camped up on Schnebly hill for cooler temps. We spent plenty of time taking pics selfies etc.

That is the plan, a group lunch is easiest, and I am down to camp.  Last time there were about 25 rigs and a genuine traffic jam trying to exit Broken Arrow.  Also, we only have one trail leader so far.  So the plan will develop more as I get this list of attendees together, but the intention is to run Broken Arrow and Soldiers Pass.

All the camp sites in Sedona are good, IF you can get a spot. Some allow you to reserve sites, but they always seemed to be booked months if not years in advance.

We can camp in the desert west of FR525 or if anyone remembers where they camped in Cottonwood last time that worked out well.

Right off of Schnebly Hill Rd by the I17, I don't think there is a better spot for dispersed camping around Sedona.

https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B053'40.4%22N+111%C2%B039'00.9%22W/@34.8945542,-111.6508272,239m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0x0 is about half a mile once you turn into the cords above and another very nice spot.

Thanks for the info!  If camped there how long does it take to traverse Schnebly road to the trail head of BA?  As I remember the 1st CANVAZ trip camping was there and it took a while to drive into town.

Are there any good spots off FR237 or FR618?

Yes!  Off of FR618 take Cedar Flat Road up into the hills (a few miles in, to avoid the riff raff).  There are plenty of side trails to pull off and camp.  It's dispersed camping, but you'll be lower in elevation than Schnebly (warmer), and it will be waaaaay less bumpy.

I wouldn't mind Cedar Flats, Schnebly is too close to the freeway for me.  I heard traffic all night last time.  You can also camp anywhere west of fr525, there is a spot I used to hit just outside red rock, but it wouldn't be big enough for us.  Add the fact that I can never seem to get out of town early on a Friday, and it makes meeting up difficult.  Anyone have HAM in the Vegas group?

That was Liam and I, at Dead Horse Ranch (http://azstateparks.com/parks/DEHO/index.html). For facilitated camping, I love it.

No HAM yet, a few of us are studying for the test at the moment.  We would be happy to meet up with any of you AZ guys interested in dispersed camping as a group (no worries if you don't want to).  A few of us will be pulling the X, is FR618 suitable to be driven with a trail out to Ceder Flats road?  I was thinking of picking it up at the offramp of the 17 that opposites 179.  Because we are going via Flagstaff and also pulling, I was hoping to keep our campsite relatively close to Sedona without going too far south.

By the way thanks for the help!

Even if I get everything done (35's and body lift), I don't have armor in the middle or rear of the truck. I would love to give the rear locker a good test. Again, this will be a last minute decision.

No armor needed to run Broken Arrow. A stock Xterra will do just fine.

Anyone have a good answer to this?  It has been years since I've explored this area.  I recall the 618 being very well graded and easily passable, the side roads however could become a bit of an issue while towing.  From google maps at lease cedar flats looks very well graded as well, and there appear to be pull offs which could be camped easily.  I wish I had better knowledge of the area so we could have an exact meeting spot as I'd like to camp too.  That is why I was asking about HAM, I'm sure once you are out there cells will be useless.

I've pulled my ATV trailer (5'x14' with a 3' tongue) the whole length of FR618 (from SR260 in Camp Verde all the way to the intersection of I-17 / SR179.  Shouldn't be an issue for a smaller trailer.  If you are towing a giant trailer, you may have more of a challenge.  Cedar flat road is well maintained as well, but again, depending on the size of the trailer, you may not enjoy it.

Justin we will be coming through flag and stopping by Dark Sky brewery around 5 pm, you are welcome to join our caravan.

I think we will camp at 9020D as it is close to Sedona at looks to have plenty of room..... That is unless someone knows from experience that spot is terrible.  It looks good on Google.

Also, I work front desk at Amara resort in Sedona so if you guys need a room for the weekend or just for the night let me know in advance and I can get it discounted. Hotels in Sedona are pricey

Can you pin that camping spot on a map?  Not sure I know where that is.
I think I found it here (https://www.google.com/maps/dir/35.1427547,-111.6845981/34.975639,-111.76902/@34.9763463,-111.7697674,15.5z)

It looks like camping here would require back tracking to Flag before coming down the 89A,  according to google this would mean a 2hr drive to the trail head.  It looks like an awesome spot and I'll have to check it out one day, but I think the 9020D spot makes more sense for the run.

Also, I'm driving up from Maricopa, so if anyone wants to caravan up to the McDonalds on Carefree then on up to the trailhead, I'd be down. Otherwise I'll be at the McDonald's around 730.

I'm thinking about coming up for this run.  If I do it will be a last minute decision.  Also, if I do I will be bringing my daughter and we will be camping Saturday night.

Same. Except I'll bring son & daughter.

I assume this will be a family friendly run correct?  I was planning on bringing my wife and daughter...

Nah not family friendly. Usually we like to commit a few robberies and maybe a homicide or two. Not to mention all the drugs we'll be doing.

Yes, family members of all ages have been on our runs.  The only issue might be an occasional swear word or two, but other than that, very family friendly.

If you bring dogs, they must be leashed at all times out on the trails (camping spots are less restrictive - especially when at a "dispersed camping" spot).

How are the logistics looking for this size of a group?  Will we be running it all at once or will half the group go earlier?

Apparently I have to get taxes done before I can leave for the weekend. Not to mention I'm still broke from moving. I haven't decided 100%, depends on a many things.

AZ-Ted is correct, aside from the talk on the CB, and perhaps late night drinking at the camp, all AZXC events are family friendly.

From the number of trucks posted up, I suggest at least breaking up into two groups, maybe 3.  Otherwise, it will quickly become a cluster F out there.

Not to step on any toes but those of us camping could easily be on the trail by 8:30.  Thoughts?

Breaking up the group has definitely been on my mind.  I just need a second trail leader.  We could either hit it early, at 8:30 as suggested, or send one group to soldiers pass first and then swap.  As the group has grown recently and I don't want to confuse the issue, perhaps it's best to simply meet up in front of the trail head and break up the group at 10 as planned.  If anyone has run these trails and would be willing to trail lead please PM me.

The trailhead is 90 minutes from McD's (I live right next to it).  I'm planning on leaving about 8:15.

I'm heading up to Sedona in a few hours to camp with some co-workers. Hopefully I can get up early enough to make it to the run in the morning. My friends like to party pretty hard and late!

Personally I think solders pass is too short and not enough space for our rigs, pink jeep, red Rock touring etc etc.

We should split 2 groups and have one at Birkenhead arrow and another at oak Creek homestead

It breaks my heart to miss this, especially after the fun from last year, but I couldn't get my truck done in time.

On the bright side, hi-lifts make maintenance tasks super quick and easy!

Very successful run, at least 22 rigs counted :)  Wish we could find a good place in Sedona to meet up and eat after the event but Sedona on a Saturday always seems to be packed.  Great run, and lots of fun, thanks to everyone who showed up and had a great time!
