Title: 2017 Flag2GC Bike Run 8/4 - 8/6
Post by: pinchel (Rob) on February 06, 2017, 09:53:01 PM
AZXC is now mentioned on the the Flag2GC website! - http://flag2gc.com/thank-you-sponsors/ (http://flag2gc.com/thank-you-sponsors/)

This years beer sponsor will be Deschutes Brewery, not Fat Tire.

***The event team is asking for some help on Sunday to help break down camp. In previous years, we all just kind of did our own thing and left. The really want us to be a bigger part of the event team/family and this is another opportunity to help out and get to know the people behind the scenes. When breaking down the End Camp there is always tons of leftover breakfast and snacks which everyone is welcome to, especially if you help out. Let me know if you want to sign up and I can get your names on the volunteer list.***

In lieu of the club committing to helping Randy Miller with his fundraising commitment we would still like to raise money to donate to the Toys for Tots so we have added a link on the forum, and I will post it in other pertinent areas. If between now and the deadline, we raise funds that can help him meet and or exceed his commitment that is required by the event we will update the status.

Last year, funds raised from this event made Christmas happen for over 9700 children! If you can donate, please do so, we ask that you make a donation of $10 to $25 but any amount is appreciated. The donation button link on the forum is located just under the Supporting Member button which is in the left corner area forum.  Here is the direct link (https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=9BVZT68LM3E9J), let me know if anyone has issues with this link or any of the links I posted.

When:  Aug 4th - Aug 6th
Where:   Flagstaff / Grand Canyon
What:  61 mile mountain bike ride from Flagstaff to the Grand Canyon
Charity: This ride raises money for the Marine League Charities (aka Toys for Tots, Wounded Marines, etc).
Our Role: We provide on-course support for the riders.  If they break down and/or can't continue, we will shuttle them to the next SAG (Stop And Group) stop.

We typically get up to Flag on Friday afternoon / evening and camp at "Start Camp". !!! Start Camp for us will be somewhere different than the riders, location posted below. !!!

On Saturday, we are up early, before the riders start which is 7am, and drive out to our assigned spots on the trail. We are on parked on the trail for a good portion of the day (bring your own lunch, water, snacks, shade). On Saturday, late afternoon, we make it to the finish line just outside of the Grand Canyon (aka "End Camp"). At End Camp, the Marines cook a big fajita dinner, and Fat Tire donates the beer. After dinner, we have a big bonfire, and goldfish (the crackers) massacre! On Sunday morning, the Marines cook up a big breakfast, and then we break camp to head for home.

This is a great event, and one that I try to make every year.  We can always use more trucks on the trail, but let's try to keep it Nissans only (i.e. don't post this on a non-Nissan board). That being said, if you have a buddy with another make of high clearance or 4wd vehicle, they would be welcome to join us.

Here is a link to the Flagstaff2GC event website:  http://flag2gc.com/ (http://flag2gc.com/)

Let's make this an even greater year for Nissans at this event!

Start Camp location for us will be here, unless the event changes maps. -> https://goo.gl/maps/L4Z2d7QooqL2 (https://goo.gl/maps/L4Z2d7QooqL2) , it is near last years 1st checkpoint. Here are the coordinates - (35.395493, -111.756143). It is not far from the 180. The actual camp site might be exact depending on the trees, but we'll be on the left side of the road and before the cattle gate. So if you go over the cattle gate, you missed our camp.

Try to get to our Start Camp as early as possible on Friday, we will be handing out maps and sharing pertinent info. We will need to be ready to roll pretty early as the riders start riding at 7am and they are much much closer to the checkpoints, which gives us less lag time to get there. We all need to be at designated checkpoints before the riders get there. And for you noobs, there are riders that can beat us to checkpoints.

We usually need a minimum of 10 rigs to cover 10 checkpoints. Once we arrive, and we have an ACTUAL number, we can assign checkpoints with buddies if possible. There will be a few checkpoints this year that will have HAM operators so if we have to we can buddy up with them.

Otherwise, we're there to ensure the safety of the riders so we'll need to cover the checkpoints. If you know anyone who has a high clearance vehicle or 4wd invite the to come along with you.

This has been taken care of... ***Volunteers are needed who can arrive early Friday morning to help mark the trail! Let us know if you can be there that early!!!***

We really need to pump this up folks, coming soon more information related to the future of this event.

Some news on this one, Fat Tire is not a beer sponsor for this year, it will be Deschutes Brewery. I like their beer too. :)

Also, if anyone would like them, I have gpx data from last years trail. It will be the same this year. Just reminder, this event is not going to be called Fat Tire, they are sticking with the Flag2GC name. Not that it isn't a major consequence but likely due to changes in beer sponsors.

This coming year, Deschutes (https://www.deschutesbrewery.com/) will be supplying our Rider Support group, aka Marshall's Militia with our own bottle beer. They aren't currently putting their stuff in cans, so hopefully we can all be responsible for our mess. No word on what it will be, since they will likely be adding seasonal brews that time of year.

That was asked, and they said no due to licensing or some other legal restriction.

It's my son's 1st birthday weekend, and the weekend before I'm moving my mom from NC to AZ, so I'll be doing a LOT of driving!  I would really like to go, and maybe next year I'll be a rider in the event!

Updated the original post, this event is going to be coming up quick. We need as many confirmations as possible. Also, IF you are planning on attending, I need your shirt size ASAP so that we can have our shirts ready and already spoken for when we get back to end camp.

Also, the Flag2GC committee has extended us the opportunity to raise funds as the participants do, we can all buy raffle tickets as whole or individual, but can now also raise funds as AZXC together to get even more recognition. So club monies would not come directly from supporting members but we'd be raising donations for Toys for Tots and Marine League Charities as a separate event.

I'm excited about this! If we had a member who was riding we could help the rider raise funds as they would be representing AZXC, but I don't think we have anyone interested as of yet. :)

***Volunteers are needed who can arrive early Friday morning to help mark the trail! Let us know if you can be there that early!!!***

This is the 20th year so this will be a little bigger and more exciting for alot of volunteers and participants. Lot's of family fun too.

Posted in the Supporting Members section, but I will post in the original post as well. We want to try and fundraise some moneys as a group this year, and AZXC has done it in the past. So Randy Miller, a former AZXC member is riding again, and he would love to raise more money than just his own personal registration fees.

So let's get this going...

My plus 2 bailed, they had made other commitments already.

In other news, the route has been confirmed, same as last year with some improvements for the riders and support.

This year, the first leg of the route will have vehicle access so we do not have a situation like last year.
They are working on setting up SAG1 so it is less hectic.
We'll have a little more coordinating ability with the HAM/Coms.

Looks like if everyone shows, not including their friends, we might have all the checkpoints covered. That's if it is 1 rig per checkpoint. There is a good chance we will have 12 checkpoints to cover this year as the event team wants to make sure we have coverage for the area where last years rider was injured as well as one or two more unmarked trail turns.

There will be new signs this year so hopefully the turns will be more visible.

Also, the pre-trail marking volunteers are taken care of. However, the event team is asking for some help on Sunday to help break down camp. Let me know if you want to sign up and I can get your names on the volunteer list.

This year and going forward, assuming the sponsor doesn't change again, the trail marker signs will have a different and way cooler look to them. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170629/72dff82f8071ab7d065df469e9bc330b.jpg)

I like the weather, but the race can be (and has been) called if the lightning gets too much, or it's just too muddy.
We used to park in the trees behind where the port-a-johns are now, all the trucks'd line up side by side in a kind of semi circle, and we ran tarps and awnings across the backs of them all creating a nifty "tent city" to huddle under and stay dry and toasty. Really toasty..  :o

Just 12 days away! Are you ready?! We still have some #Flag2GC stickers you can grab, and we're still taking donations. We have not collected our $500 goal yet!

Yes, you can donate cash at the event. Yes, this is an AZXC sponsored event, we haven't decided what we are paying for. Usually we pitch in for wood but the fire situation is still under constraints...TBD.

What time Friday is everyone heading up?

Great fun again! Hoping everyone comes back, we definitely need more pickup trucks on trail. Thanks Ted for showing up in the 2wd rental!
