Title: April Xcursion - April 24th - Wickenburg Mountains
Post by: DZRT on March 25, 2010, 03:14:28 PM
LATEST INFO: Lets meet at Cracker Barrel off of Glendale and Loop 101 for quick coffee and/or breakfast at about 7am and roll out at 8am. All the West-West siders can meet us along the way on Grand Ave. Bring stuff for lunch.

Open thread to vote on poll.

So, we need to move fast!!! What do you guys wanna do for April Xcursion!!!

I took the top results from both the Future Activities Poll and Future Xcursions Poll and created the poll above.

I have some emails out there for some volunteer ideas, so lets see what they say. I'll let you all know if/as they respond. So if the vote comes back as Volunteer being the highest, then hopefully we can line something up. More on this later.

And if you guys want to do Ghost Towns... you know I'll show you guys a good time  ;)

Poll closes quick! You've got 14 days, closes on April 8th, highest vote wins.

You can change your vote??  ??? That's news to me, lol! I'll have to fix that for next time.  ;) Or maybe not.  ;)

And you see there are 15 votes... does that mean that 15 people are going?? I'd be surprised.  ;)

Ghost towns it is! Wickenburg Mountains Trail.

Lets meet at Cracker Barrel off of Glendale and Loop 101 for quick coffee and/or breakfast at about 7am and roll out at 8am. All the West-West siders can meet us along the way on Grand Ave. Bring stuff for lunch.

Load up your GPS's with caches along the trail and we'll check them out too. (BTW, There is a cache in the parking lot of Cracker Barrel).

If I don't have your cell number for texting yet, please PM it to me incase there are any last minute changes.

I have played a lot up in this area, though I have not done this trial yet. This is a very popular trial and a Google search will give ya a lot of info... lots of trial pics out there.

Here is a thread on the trail from the VJC back in 2006 with pics http://www.virtualjeepclub.com/showthread.php?t=17760 (http://www.virtualjeepclub.com/showthread.php?t=17760)

Here is another write up on it: http://jwheadedwest.blogspot.com/2010/02/snow-covered-view-from-mountain-top-at.html (http://jwheadedwest.blogspot.com/2010/02/snow-covered-view-from-mountain-top-at.html)

This will be my first trip with the club. Could any tell me if extra fuel is needed?   I sure there is not a Am Pm market on every hill top!

Plus any gear that might br recommened by any of you folks that has been on this run?  I really do not know what to expect?

Remember where I am from (Fl) a over pass is consider a hill!

PS:   Where the beach and local surf shop (Ron Jon's Coco Beach) ???

I havenít seen any AM PM's on the hill tops yet, either... thank God.

I don't know what the distance is according to the trail books or whatever, but I'd guess about 50 miles?? Give or take 100 miles???  ;D You'll have to look to be sure. Like I said, I have never done this trail, I don't know what to expect other than what the trail reviews say. But this is no Arizona Strip so you don't need to bring fuel. We always top off before we hit the dirt anyway.

There are no guarantees in wheeling... which is part of the thrill of wheeling.

There is always a chance we will get some butt-pucker wheeling in (butt-pucker is what happens when you get scared). You never know. Even on familiar trials. You have to be ready for anything.

I don't know what to expect either... but here are some guesses:

Nasty Arizona Pin strips... that's from experience of other ghost town runs.  You will scratch the heck out of your truck.
Youíre going to be tired and dirty at the end of the day. Your truck will get nasty dusty/dirty inside, even if you have your windows up the whole time.
You will see a bit of articulation and/or hill climbs where all you see is blue sky.

Does anyone know what this trail is rated as according the wheeling Bible? I don't think it's a beginning trail by looking at the pics on the Internet.

Anyone else know what to expect???

We've got some issues going on here... one truck down, one car down, another truck needs a mod... that kind of thing... because of low interest, despite the 5 votes, we just don't want to rush to get everything fixed by Saturday morn to do a low interest run.

We may be able to do something on Sunday if we get everything squared away.

So, you guys that are left, have fun!  ;) It's suppose to be a great trail! Post pics... or it didn't happen.  ;D

This may be a dumb question, buuuuut, Is there a experianced member to lead the pack?  I sure there is some sort of club protocall on this?

I off this week and i usually don't have a clean week end to run. I will be there on the 24th for sure!

Youíre experienced!  ;) You can lead!  ;)
Seriously... unless someone posts up, youíre the only one that has shown continued interest. It happens sometimes. Things come up for people. But someone may still post up saying they wanna go... I bet there is one out there...

Normally not a issue. But I know where we are going but I could tell you where the trail starts!
If memory serves there is un-improved road NW of phx that goes from the hard top to the Vulture Mine then twist up to wickenberg. But I am unsure.

Any way thats what my trop-map book says.

I guess the bigger question is?

How many peaple are we looking at?   Ahead count would be a good thing to see if we can even get this thing off the ground.

Thanks Wally.  ;)

There are bypasses for most everything. There are lines that are 3.0 all the way to 5.0 for buggys. Not advised without a locker & belly armor.

I also have an open seat if anyone wants to ride for the day,  8)

This was low interest in this run... only one person as of Thursday. I encourage everyone who is now interested to coordinate with each other and go. There isn't any reason to not go if you want to.

As of this moment, there isn't anything posted up about remaining people going and I'm not aware of anything going on off the board. I missed some previous posts... Touch bases with Tim and see what is going on with that open invite posted above in this thread.

I had really hoped to go on this, but I just wasn't able to pick up a set of used off road wheels/tires.  If I was sure that there would have been bypasses than I would have went with my street set up.  I'm still very interested in doing this sometime after I get some more appropriate wheels/tires.

Title: Re: April Xcursion - April 24th - Wickenburg Mountains The Not Event!
Post by: Ghostrider on April 25, 2010, 08:20:24 PM
Well, what can I say. I have been planning this trip for a month now and I work 6 days a week,  I am disapointed that with all the members  this club has, a newby and  with a genuinue interest in joining the club is one that showed up  (early) ready to go.

I think going forward the leadership needs to get a head count early on.   If the event does not have ample partipation< call the event.    My time is very limited just to have these outings.   Best of all makes the leadership to have final decision, for the best of the club.

I know this not the US Army Transportation Doc,  but we should be more organized.

I am sorry I am not very political.  :o

Now I got that 800 lb Gorrila off my chest, I will tell you about my non-event run with whoooping 1 Xtera!

I proceeded to what I estamated the most logical route and I motored down with a convoy of 1 truck to the area , Topa, AZ. (I am not sure of the Spelling)  I follow 3 routes but I found that the unimproved roads /trails no longer are there. The AZ canal cuts all 3 routes at the base of the Mountain.

When I was just about to give up, a couple of Jeep Guys linked up and I follow them the335th street and made a day of it chasing Ghost at the Vulture MIne. Talk about a creeeeepy place!   Some of the grime history is 7 crimmals were hung from the Glory Pit and a bunch of deathe resulting from early mining.
Got some great pictures and Joe the mess cook says hey. He only beeen there for 100 years!
Plus played in the area and the land scape is more than words!

I think its best if those who know they are going or are tentative about going post up and keep in touch with each other right up until its go time.
Leadership is one thing but in the end it should really be those who want to go to make sure others are going to be there and when.
Touch base the day before and get phone numbers exchanged, thats the way most of the unofficial excursions go, so to some degree the official excursions should go this way as well.

The leadership should probably have some hand in this if they see its going to be a low turn out or a really iffy excursion and perhaps message folks to post up and even if need be, reschedule.

I can see signs of people trying to get some sort of list going as I read this thread but in the end it really fell apart.

For those who really want to go I think its best if they use what energies they have to make it happen and connect with others, but I can totally understand a new soon to be member getting burned on how this one turned out. In my own recollection this is the first 1 man Xcursion, taken on by a someone looking to be a member even.

Good points, fangars.  :)

This is a 1st in the ~5 years I've been involved with the club. Very disappointing IMHO :-[ Sucks you got stood up, but sounds like you made it a good day though.  8) Hope you try again if there is a trip in May or beyond.

I think this be a good run for potentioal new members and old timers alike. This is not alot stress on vehicals and resources. Good trial for alot of folks just looking for a fun run and not a techically challeging run.

I think we should look at putting a future date before things get really hot here in PHX! 8)

Well its nice to see everyone who posted up on this run who wanted to go did not come forward and say i or we could not go .Any takers ....................................................................I thought so !!! So on this note i dont see anyone posting up they couldnt make it  ................. Lets see I think there was Ted,Brenda,Wally, and................. Well thats three so two more and that would make 5 ,O Tomas wanted to go but he went chasing butterfly's. I think some of the blame would be the lurkers who said i want to go !!!!! I will take the blame for not going do to my truck being down!!!!!!!!!!!! And Tim i think you have a good point .This is a 1st in the ~5 years ....I would say 4 1/2 tim as your truck was down for 1/2 the year but point taken. There has been other dates that where never done so this is a fact and that is the 7 years i have been in the club!!!!
Now those of you who post up need to be an adult and take the time to  post up you can NOT make it so others can look forward to the event and see who there gonna wheel with .
Its like ebay you post up to buy/ purchase the item and then dont .There is a cluase on ebay that says you need to reply if you are not going to purchase such said item .,NOT MUCH DIFFRENT LURKERS !!!!!

Thank you for yor intrest on this run but you did go on your own and rule of thumb is you dont wheel alone so on that note you did what most wont!Good for you so i dont think anyone can bitch about this you are an adult Ghostrider and you chose to run alone thats great .

Ghostrider,

I am usually able to go on runs every weekend (except last and this weekend). Most of the members that go out have each others number. PM me if you want to go out one weekend and I will give you my number.
Title: Re: April Xcursion - April 24th - Wickenburg Mountains
Post by: DZRT on April 26, 2010, 11:01:08 AM
I hate to repeat what has already been posted in this thread... but I guess I have to so there is understanding.

THIS WAS A LOW INTEREST RUN. As of Thursday there was ONLY ONE PERSON. There could have been more, there could have been less in the final hours before the run. But there wasnít.

Therefore Ghostrider did not get stood up by anyone.

I only got ONE phone number, as I had requested in this thread, of someone who wanted to go. Then that person wasn't able to go and let me know. So I then had only ONE people confirmed and Zero Phone numbers.

So with that being said... being said again... I don't see why there is anger or disappointment or even hate.

There has been low outcome of excursions and meeting in the very recent past (November, December)... It happens... People get mad, people get busy, they do other things, have emergencies or even have to fix their trucks before going out. It's part of life.

Ghostrider... you really should have gotten with T-Ray about his open invention instead of wheeling by yourself. It would have been a much better of a guarantee that your outing would have been successful than just taking chances on your own (i.e. showing up at a location that no one is going to be at). T-Ray was more than happy to take anyone along and he's not that hard to get a hold of.

Not sure we should worry too much about who to blame, but rather we as a club, not just the leadership, should make an effort to not let this happen to the would be members who might be under the impression that the excursions are set in stone, as the meeting times and places are on the thread.

The day or perhaps a few days before there is to be an excursion we should have a posted up list of people who are going, and if it so happens there is no more then 1 rig then a cancellation or rescheduling should be posted no less then 24 hours ahead of time.

If you read this thread you can see as a member who has been in a while that things look real iffy and those of us who have seen how things have happened or not happened in the past would know to call some one or post up for definite confirmation that this is going to happen, or not.

Thats all very well and fine for us who know but the new soon-to-be members might be assuming that its just going to happen as its written down in the thread and never concretely contradicted later in the thread to indicate that it might not occur. Yes there were concerns raised and for us that have been in a while that casual raising of concerns is enough, but for the newer members we should, as a club, make sure there is a post with the list of people who are definitely going so that those people can exchange numbers.

Its not productive too worry about blame, lets just take some steps to not let it happen again if at all possible, besides a good deal of the blame could rest on my own shoulders. Not just as a club member who was watching as this thread fizzled out, but also as someone who knew Ghostrider personally and should have made sure he knew how these things have been going down in the past.

This is not a leadership issue, its a club issue, and I am not seeing the "anger" and "hate" brought up in this thread, but I do see and understand the disappointment.
Its not healthy to blow this out of proportion, we are not talking about 9/11 here, just an excursion that we let fizzle out without letting the newbs know it might not happen.
