Maybe we can get you on some BLUE or RED trails as well!  Start off on the Green (Top of The World) is great for awesome scenery and then slowly progress up!

Last year I did Red Trails (Hells Revenge and Poison Spider Mesa) with only a 2 inch lift and rock sliders.  It can be done, just pick the right line and if you need a spotter ask for one.

I hope to be leading Fins-N-Things next year so check it out and sign up the day I am leading it!

If something opens up in our condo I'll be sure to let everyone know as well.  I really don't think it will since we are all hardcore about going no matter what.

Its going to be a "less rambunctious" in other condos that's for sure.  BTW Beer Pong Tournament in our condo!

This will be the working trail schedule for 2012.

Each Color Group get a little harder as the week goes on Mon-Thurs, Friday is a bit easier trail for that color group to get the raffle started earlier in the day. When registration opens you of course can choose from any trail any day as long as you meet the trial requirements.

I'll be running blues all week, except Thursday. Give Hell's Revenge a shot... I'll make a game day decision on Hell's Gate when I see it in person...

The big convoy rolling out of Flag Sunday morning? We're probably staying the night in Flag Sat night and roll with the convoy if so. No expo though for us.

Its not the exit outta Hells GAte its also the entrance down into it to worry about as well!  IT can be done with a fairly stock truck, just listen to your spotter, but there is not a lot of people that will spot someone up that if they don't know you.  (FYI I will not spot anyone up this).

Keep in mind those of you who are coming to Moab, and want to run Hells Gate, there is a lot of consequences (google some videos of it) if something goes wrong inside the gate.  Whoever is experienced there and spotting will probably give you a huge briefing on this obstacle.  I think it looks worse in person than in the photos, and takes a lot of trust in the spotter and driving skills to get down and up Hells Gate.

With that said those of you going to goneMoab, you drive at your own risk and its ultimately your truck.  ITs about having fun out there, and trust me after my first year there is a lot of fun to be had!

I'm well aware of the consequences of Hell's Gate. Status listed as questionable with a gameday decision. :b
Title: Re: goneMOAB 2012
Post by: T-Ray on December 07, 2011, 06:03:35 PM
Hells Gate has a significant pucker factor. Going up not as much as dropping down, although if my rig had a stock track width I'd sing a different tune. I got more of an adrenaline rush dropping down vs. going up. There are plenty of people to spot you & a winch line is never going to be far away.

Will be a fun time no matter what trails you run or what obstacles you drive/spectate. I'm 50/50 right now on attending....

Title: Re: goneMOAB 2012

Hells Gate is an optional obstacle on Hells Revenge.  You could run Hells Revenge and bypass all of the obstacles.  As with any trails during GONE Moab, there are certain minimum vehicle requirements for the trails (especially the Red and the Black trails), and the trail leaders have the final say on who is allowed to run the trail.
Title: Re: goneMOAB 2012
Post by: AZXterra410 on December 10, 2011, 07:15:42 PM
You think Hells Revenge is doable in an X with 2inch lift, sliders and 285's? Because that's where my truck will be at Moab.
Title: Re: goneMOAB 2012
Post by: coatimundi01 on December 10, 2011, 07:21:04 PM
Marcin did it with 285s, sliders, and I think his lift was only 2" at the time..

I'll be right there with you Thursday! Us stick shifts gotta stick together!

That's probably the biggest concern of mine in doing Hells Gate, the manual. We will see, like you said it may come down to game day decision.

Ahhhhhh Hells Gate....

Yeah the entrance can be a bit hairy at times too especially the truggies that drop in and are gearred reallly low with no weight in the back end.  Ive seen front end wheelies there.

The exit can go either direction.  The right line is really narrow and without a front locker it is even narrower.  If the front tire drops off the wall you are screwed.  I always tell folks the base isnt littlered with plastic, glass, metal & oil because it was easy.

Now watch those videos and tell me how many want to do Hells Gate or even attempt it.  I would highly recommend NOT doing it unless you are ok with the consequences.
Title: Re: goneMOAB 2012
Post by: AZXterra410 on December 12, 2011, 09:45:52 PM
It's interesting that the videos of people flipping usually involve a highly lifted vehicle with a super wide stance. Is there a benefit to having a more stock vehicle? It would seem that a narrower wheelbase and less lift would be beneficial on something like this.
Title: Re: goneMOAB 2012
Post by: 11Pro4X on December 12, 2011, 11:23:00 PM
IMHO I would avoid that obstacle unless you are a really experienced wheeler.
Title: Re: goneMOAB 2012
Post by: T-Ray on December 13, 2011, 06:55:39 AM
Ahh c'mon. Quit scaring people, it looks way worse than it is. Yes the consequences of failure are severe but that's if no one had a cable on ya to begin with just for safety. I'd let anyone drive my X up that without a second thought.

IMHO, there were spots on Hells Revenge that gave me a bigger pucker factor than the famous Gate. If ya wanna try it but are afraid, have a cable with a little slack hooked up right from the beginning.
Title: Re: goneMOAB 2012

I like the cable idea... hehe, but I probably will bypass this year. It will give me something to shoot for next year!
Title: Re: goneMOAB 2012
Post by: alpine spirit on December 13, 2011, 09:22:05 AM
The ones that flipped ... Jeep was a local gal in CO, she took her eyes off the spotter for one second and by the time she looked back it was nothing but blue sky and then panic set in.

The canadian buggy, he went to far to the right (if you are driving) and then turned into the hill to pull back out.  That works on flat ground but when its a 45 degree angle it made him walk out of the crack and roll.

The X was me years ago and my back tire pealed off the wall and without a front locker (then) I couldn't pull myself back on track.  Back rear quarter bashed the wall... didn't bother me though.

I post this for a few reasons...
* Most people have to drive their rigs back
* Winch line wont reach until you are half way up
* Winches are too slow to drive attached and just get pulled under
* If the driver Fudges up, doesnt concentrate, panics there is a good chance you are not driving it home
* If you peal off the wall you are not going to get going again so you are now parked on your brakes... guess what happens when your parked on your brakes while the winch is pulled down.... the fluid heats up and you WILL creep backwards hopefully you got really good fluid
* Oh and I gaurantee for most folks sitting there seeing nothing but blue sky while the truck makes creaking sounds your foot will start to shake on the brake pedal... trust me this is not good.
* hooking up a winch line can be the worst if the foot is shaking or the truck is shifting due to hot brake fluid, I have had one truck pop back on the line a second after hooking it up then having that line pop right net to my ear like a guitar string
* goneMOAB is the ONLY event that has not rolled a truck in there
* on average a rig rolls in there every 2-3 weeks from April on
* if someone rolls it in there then I will have to deal with the BLM, police and probably our event insurance

So no I dont take this obstacle lightly, done right and well its easy as hell <rimshot>.   Unlike most obstacles where oh darn you will dent your rig if you screw up, lose a mirror or such this becomes a hazard for driver and recovery crew if done improperly.

Never been to GoneMoab but looks like I will be able to make it out this year for Wed, Thurs and Fri. Looking at your schedules, I was thinking:

Wed: Fins N Things with Marcin
Thurs: Hells Revenge without the Gate I would say
Friday: Hmmm? Tip Toe through Hell or Steel Bender

Ben and Marcin is Hells Revenge and Tip Toe through Hell the same run? If not Ben then I say we do Tip Toe on Friday, What do you think? Marcin how difficult is Steel Bender, maybe do that if not to difficult for our 2 inch lifts and 285's? Also, Marcin what time does everybody usually meet up in the morning for the runs? I will be leaving my house to drive straight there so I am there in time for Fins N Things Wednesday morning, I just have to plan ahead for the drive time and such. Also meet up with my condo people, maybe before the run maybe after I don't know yet.

Thanks for the info guys,

Sunny

Yes Hells Revenge and Tip Toe are the same, except one has the optional obstacles and the other will bypass them and not even stop.  If you are armored then Steel Bender you should be fine, take a look at the vehicle requirements, Steel Bender is rated a 5 this year, 32 inch tires and sliders are the only requirement, but use your judgement.  I think you should be fine, but its your rig.

Departure times vary per trail and they will be listed in your sign up packet.  Fins since I am leading it and its already looking like a huge group we are going to start at 0800.  Its roughly a 12 hour drive to Moab from Phoenix.

If anyone has any other questions post them up!

Thanks Marcin, sorry so many questions, I've never been so just trying to plan it out, you said it's roughly a 12 hour drive fom Phx but when I map it on Google and MSN it show's 7.5-8.25hrs of drive time, what makes it more like 12hrs? I would be leaving say at 11p-12p and driving straight there so virtually no traffic, what do you think?

Sunny, look up 'Steel Bender, The Drop' on youtube. There's a stock front bumper X with a 2" lift doing it so I figure if he did that trail, then I will challenge myself and do it also. But after you watch that video, you'll see we 100% will need a rad skid... ;)

What about the drive, any thoughts on that, now that I've talked to a few people they say driving through the Indian Res at night maybe not a good idea, is it truly a 12 hour trip or more like what google maps is saying, 7.5-8.25hrs?

If you're driving at night through the res pack heat!  We were in a caravan and stopped a few times and took our time.  Driving all night and then a trail plus the after hours activities you'll be exhausted.  But it's you and I don't know if you are up for being up that long.

Phoenix to Moab is 8-9 hours with stops for gas and lunch...in a SAS'd 1st gen on 35" tires, loaded with gear & beer for a week ;)

Sunny, look up 'Steel Bender, The Drop' on youtube. There's a stock front bumper X with a 2" lift doing it so I figure if he did that trail, then I will challenge myself and do it also. But after you watch that video, you'll see we 100% will need a rad skid... ;)

Skids and sliders are strongly recommended on Steel Bender.  There is a section called Rubble Trouble (sp??) that will be absolutely no fun without armor.

As with any trails, the trail leaders have the right to turn away any trucks that are not equipped for the trail (for example, they would never allow a stock truck on any Black trails).  In fact, they did turn away one stockish truck from Steel Bender last year.

So driving straight through and basically just stopping for gas it can be done in 8 hours, correct? Thats what its sounding like to me, I dont own a gun and as long as I dont break down, I should be ok going through the Res or do some crazy maybe drinking indians stop people and cause problems? I dont know, I have never driven through there, so I'm trying to figure out if it's a good or bad idea, maybe I won't be able to make it this year.

You can make it through fine, just keep an eye out for stumbling people on the road.  I almost hit someone on the res back in school driving through at night.  8 hours should be doable if you drive it straight through.  If you do stop for gas make sure its a well lit gas station and such. Basic common sense I guess.

Why is everyone so afraid of the res? We cruised thru there no problem during the day both ways. Stopped at Sonic for lunch, I bought some stray dogs some footlong hot dogs, gased the rigs, and took off.

Yeah, I think if I do it, I will have to plan ahead and call ahead and find gas stations open 24 hours because my X is only getting about 265 miles on a full tank, so after filling up in Flagstaff I will still need 1 more gas top off from there to Moab. Like you said plan ahead and I should be able to do it just a matter of will I or not, driving at night by myself, hmmmm?

If you don't you will regret it.  Ted and I had the same conclusion about Moab last year when it was our first time.  Yeah we will go and see what this is about and after a day into we were already talking about next year.  It is something that must be done.  You will have the time of your life out there.
