Post by: fangars on June 29, 2009, 09:27:02 PM

Got my new Manfroto tripod and Head last week in anticipation of monsoon.  Also got a nicer lens this year than the crappy Kit lens that came with my Rebel Xti that I was working with last year.  So I'm hoping to get some good lightening shots this year.  Still real amateurish tho compared to your work - excellent pics.

Here's my favorite from last year of mine:

And I caught this one 3 or 4 years ago with a Powershot G6 - before I got my SLR.  Hence the exposure issues but it contains the Xterra :)

I stay away from the lightning for now, I have an all steel tripod.
I hope to get something more lite and less lightning rod-like.
My wife caught some lightning handheld, kind of amazing when you consider the shutter speed.

Funny you should say that - My wife calls the new Tripod a Lightening Rod! lol.  I run like hell when it gets to close :)

I use digikam for batch operations and organization.
Gimp is my editing application.
If there is sharpening needed I use a process involving an inverted gaussian blur overlay which tends to wash out all contrast requiring another overlay layer which in turn tends to over saturate. I blend everything using layer masks until it looks as natural as I can make it without looking flat.
My mission during processing is to create as much depth as possible.
Some images you just can not sharpen, those images I cull from the bunch.
My software all runs on linux, so you might not like my way of doing things, most photogs do not.
I suggest using gimp for your editing only if you meet this one requirement and that is you dont already have and have started using photoshop.
If you paid for photoshop and already know where everything is keep at it. If not, then I suggest you go to www.gimp.org and download gimp for whatever operating system you use.
It will be no more difficult to learn then photoshop, people who start with photoshop and try to learn gimp have issues with everything not being the same as photoshop, they forget for some reason that gimp is not photoshop but have the unreasonable expectation for it to be exactly the same.
If your needs ever exceed what you can get from gimp then I suggest you purchase photoshop.
For my own needs gimp does just fine.

Here is an image from behind Tombstone Ridge.

I live in Phoenix, Tombstone Ridge is a boulderscaped ridge that spans from Sugarloaf Mountain across the Beeline Highway towards Fourpeaks.
So named for the granite boulders that used to be harvested there to make tombstones out of.

Here is what most people see of it as they leave Phoenix for Payson.

Awesome, tonight looks like its shaping up to be a big storm night, no images for me as I have to cut up and bend a bunch of steel so it does not get rained on.

I actually could not do anything in the back yard due to winds so I went to Papago and got some images anyway.
Here are two.

Wife wouldn't let me run out with the camera at 2am last night to catch lightening.  Shame - damn stuff was so close it kept me awake anyway, so I might as well have been out with the camera :)

ripped through Surprise last night and woke me at 11:30. Awesome light and sound display, and I couldn't see the house across the way for a while as the rain was so heavy..
(more please..)

Along the Apache Trail.
Monsoon clouds die down as we drove out east, all the real action was happening in the west valley.
