Is the rock garden easy to find on the trail. Iíve watched a couple videos of smiley rock trail, one showed zero rock crawling, and one showed a very decent garden. I have a gpx file for the trail but want to make sure it includes the rock garden, is it part of an alternate route next to the main trail?

Maybe we can talk the Event Coordinator into making a date poll?  Anyone know his name?  Victor?

Get a permit - $20 for the family pass and it's good for a year --> https://land.az.gov/recreational-permit-portal

I suggest doing Smiley Rock from Jerome, not Potato Patch, and avoid that rock garden* unless you have another rig with you and are armored up.  From Jerome, go behind the fire station, see lots of Arizona, see power lines, get a little hill climb in, and make your way to Smiley Rock.  Fun Treks gives you really good instructions.  Take pics.  Then reverse the trip back to Jerome, eat at Bobby-Q's, then, wine is your thing, wine bar crawl and end up at Cellar 433 (across the street from Bobby-Q's) and admire Verde Valley from their HUGE picture window.  Cellar 433 has wine flights and port tasting.  Cellar 433 --> https://www.cellar433.com/tasting-room/

* I've been through that rock garden twice.  Almost rolled the rig the first time, and second time I was with a group, and it took a lot of spotting to get through.  My Fun Treks book is annotated with profanities on that trail.

Iíve noticed that some of these trails need permits, soldier pass for example and the forest service only issues 12 per day. Have you guys had issues with getting these permits?

Also Permit holders may hold only one permit at a time and wait until after the permit date before requesting another permit.

So running multiple trails in a day is not common?
Iím not sure what trails need permits. I know soldiers pass for sure but other than that not sure. Broken arrow doesnít need one yet I donít think

Best: Smiley rock( more technical and challenging less traffic)
Broken Arrow ( most scenic and still fun slick rock climbing but could be horribe trail traffic depending on day and time.

Lames
Soldiers pass now need a permit and not worth the wheeling but for the hiking.

Oak creek/powerline is just very low to no 4wd needed. But if you have an extra day to wheel good to do.
