  • jcm45: Hi everyone, I just joined up here and am looking for some advice. Anyone have a shop they recommend for their Xterra? I just purchased an 02 and discovered the seller managed to cover up a thrown rod so likely need a new engine. I've called a few shops and most seem to not be overly familiar with them. I don't want someone inexperienced potentially doing something wrong or milking the labor. Can anyone recommend a shop that's had this done before?

LCA Ball Joints :(
« on: March 18, 2019, 02:16:47 PM »
Both LCA ball joints are leaking grease.  Looks like I'll need to replace them.  Was looking at Moog, and the instructions are scaring me - this looks really simple, but they have me pulling the whole wheel apart.  I crawled underneath, and it looks like I can get away with undoing the hinge bolts, lower shock mount and the anti-sway bar link.  Then undo the pinch bolt to separate the LCA from the wheel assy, pickle fork the ball joint out, then reverse to assemble

Since I just noticed the grease, how long do I have before failure?  Googling this I saw quotes ranging from $750-1400 to do this job - kinda pricey for $160 in parts (from Moog).  I cringe at taking my wheels apart.

Thoughts?

Itís relatively simple to replace. No need to take the wheel assembly apart just remove from spindle and lca mounts to frame and thatís it. Because take the cam bolts out mark them and the frame with a paint marker so you donít need an alignment after.

I'm all for DIY on this truck - every mod on it I did myself, with a lot of how-to advice from my friends :)

I'll take you up on your offer.  However, I have to work this weekend, and have surgery on the 29th, which will take me out of commission for 3 weeks.  So I'm looking at end of April or so.

Thank you!

I'll PM you on FB.  I have surgery this week, so it will be mid-late April.  Got the Moog lower ball joints and the grease boots for the upper ball joints (yeah - I nicked them).  Network Alignments told me to not bother with a front end alignment until after I get the lower ball joints installed.  Since I have surgery coming up, I know I'm not driving too much between now and when we replace teh lower ball joints, so it's all ok if we take it apart without marking it.

Curious - how do you get the grease in there?  There are no zerks.
