I talked to a ranger at a car wash few weeks ago regarding the permits....

Apparently they have approached a few companies to come up with a "bar code decal" solution, where a unique decal is generated with a bar code that a ranger can scan to verify if indeed you did pay for the permit instead of the current paper tags.

The area behind lake pleasant according to him is due to people trying to avoid paying the $6 a day tag so they think going around is free and fine. He said in the last few years they have seen an increase in small cars in that area that get stuck and abandoned even stolen cars stripped and dumped, which they have to pay outside companies to recover.

He also stated there are numerous new signs stating a permit is required in that area, but I have not seen any obvious ones except the one at the staging grounds.

So it's based on vehicle, not persons? Interesting. Ok, well I have been meaning to get one. I just keep forgetting.

Also, what is the other permit out there? I thought there was one for another land access but was free by requesting it. Or was I dreaming?

There are other areas where you need to check in with the Ranger's station.  For example, to run Bulldog Canyon out in Mesa, you'll need a permit from the US Forest Service and the corresponding gate code (both free).

Here is the place to get your AZ land use permit.  You are responsible for your own and AZXC often camps or wheels in places were these are required.  They only accept cash, checks, or money orders, and you are sending in a form.  So unless you want to wait in line at the office for a last minute permit, now is the time to fill out and pay the fee.

Arizona State Land Department

 Phoenix, AZ 85007

Went down there today to renew my permit.  Good News!  They will begin accepting online applications and payments in April 2016 (one week away).
