CB radios
« on: March 18, 2013, 12:29:24 AM »
OK, another newbie question.  Did a search but could not find info.

Where can I go in the greater phx/scottsdale area to check out some CB radios and perhaps get them installed/tuned?  Who still sells these?

Does anyone have both CB and a race radio?  Which do you prefer?

How good are the handheld ones?   Specificallly, if I were ever able to join the group on a run, would the handheld versions be good enough or not?

Thanks everyone.  I have much to learn still.   I appreciate your tolerating the noobie questions.

Cheers!

Most likely a higher frequency/higher powered commercial or ham radio is my guess.

Handhelds can be used for runs but I would strongly suggest getting a magnet mount external antenna to plug into your handheld for better range.  Metal boxes aka your truck will greatly reduce your range without an external antenna.

On the west side, Apollo Communications is a good CB shop.  They are at 43rd Ave and Northern.  I bought my CB there and had them install it (Uniden Pro 520XL).

There is another CB shop on the east side - somewhere in Mesa, but I am not as familiar with that shop.

As for handhelds, they work well, as long as you get the magnetic mount external antenna (like knightrider mentioned).  The one I bought is the Cobra HHRoadtrip, and it comes with the magnetic mount antenna.  Amazon usually has these for a good price.  I never used it, but Kuma borrowed it two years ago in Moab when his radio died.  He was trail leading that day, and the handheld radio worked flawlessly all day long.

HAM radio is the best but nobody runs those because you have to get a lisence and the radios are expensive.

I thought I heard that the place in Mesa closed?  Can anyone confirm?

That leaves Apollo on the W side, I guess.  Have people had good experiences there?

I don't really know anything about them, but I guess some groups are running these kinds of "race radios" but I don't really know anything about them but they sure seem to be expensive.  Then you still need to get a CB setup too.....

Wow, never seen that. Looks cool though. I cant decide how they get away with not being techinically a HAM radio at those power levels. The spectrum it covers is in the UHF and VHF... hmmm. I am intrigued.

Thanks guys.  I am thinking that I may get a handheld with the external magnetic mount antenna, as suggested.  That way I can take it in different vehicles.

Now I will do some shopping

I have the Cobra HH Roadtrip too and it works great.  Never had an issue with it.

I've got that same radio and it's been pretty cool.
