Nobody showed, so at 8 AM, Margie, Angel, Rocket and I took off and tried to make it across the Agua Fria per the instructions in Az Backroads 2nd Edition (Wells/Petersen) and could not make it across due to deep water crossing.  After a few side roads and other dead ends, we finally took 9987 to the river and were able to cross with no problem and complete the trip.  The day was rather warm but the trip was enjoyable, especially the history and looking at the Tip Top ruins.
