electric or air locker
« on: April 05, 2013, 02:37:25 PM »
Well guys I just ordered my lift Nisstec extended travel ultimate kit. Man I so much stuff to install its not funny just have no time. My question for everyone is should I go with a ARB air locker or is there an E-locker available that's a bit cheaper and I won't need to also install a compressor.

I have heard of people adding the factory e-locker after the fact... but you have to swap axles and all, would probably be a huge headache.

I would go with the ARB option.

Sounds like we're getting close to needing a Tucson area mod day ;D

Changing out the axle housing isn't a terrible burden, especially on a leaf spring setup. If you found the e-locker and axle from an OR or Pro-4x Xterra from a wrecking yard I'm sure you'd save a ton of money over going with an air locker setup. Between the locker itself, the compressor, tank, and wiring everything together I think the last time I priced it I was looking at about 3k. So swapping out parts from another X for under 1k would be preferable in my book unless you really want the durability of the airlocker and the expandability of having the compressor for future mods.

I've yet to find a yard in Tucson that carries newer Nissans. Plenty in Phoenix though.

Well ARB locker isn't quite that expensive. I've got it at around 1,500.00 but I've seen some e-locker for around 700-800.

That's not bad everything included. And that also leaves room for expansion if you ever want to put in a front air locker and an air horn. Not to mention it's handy as hell getting to reinflate your tires quickly after airing down for a good day of wheeling ;D

Very true I also was thinking that way. It's just the initial investment that hurts a bit.

I swapped out my rear axle on my old SE 4x4 crew for a nismo one but that was because I had busted an axle housing. It wasn't real rough, I suck at electrical stuff and had to have my son hook up the E-locker for me. It worked out well.
