  • PitSnipe (Kyle): Wow, I have not heard of this issue. 15 hour job for a $50 part is nuts. Hopefully someone that knows of this issue will speak up.

  • downs44: Got an 06 that just went through SMOD. Got everything replaced. Now my low oil pressure light is flickering on after the engine warms up and the truck is at idle. Doing some digging on the forums it looks like a common problem is the rear timing cover gallery gasket leaking and causes the symptoms. Looks like a 15 hour or so repair for a $50 part. Was wondering if anyone else has had this issue and any words of advise. To save some dialogue, the oil pressure sensor is about a year old and I changed the oil and filter after i noticed the light and that did not fix the issue.

You wouldn't happen to have trip date or gps track for this would you? I have been looking to do a run like this for some time, planning on doing it this fall.

Well done btw.

That should give you some ideas...

Also, if you don't own it already, this is a great book for exploring:

Its what I use to find all of the backroads I travel on.

Thanks for the tip. I am going to start planning this summer for a fall run. How many days did you take total? is 4 enough?

2.5 days is minimum.
I left the valley Friday afternoon to camp at Lake Mead Friday night. Saturday I drove in and Sunday I drove out. It's a ways away from any gas station so bring extra fuel. I had 5 extra gallons of gas and if I hadn't taken it, I would have had a bit over a gallon left in my tank after. If I were to do it again, I would love to take 15 extra gallons of fuel and stay out 4-5 days and explore even more small side roads.

Right on. I am set up right now to carry 8 gallons extra so it would give me a bit more wiggle room, but I might expand that a bit. Definitly researching this area because I want to head up there bad

It was a great weekend. If only Xterras were a bit better on gas. My dad's 2012 4Runner that was with me has the same size tank, but he didnt use any extra gas and still had a quarter tank left.  >:( Hes lucky...I used 5 extra gallons and finished with a quarter tank.

Obviously the amount of gas will depend on how many side roads you travel on. In that area, the main roads are really beautiful, but the side roads are AMAZING. In my mind, the more side roads in the middle of nowhere, the better. ;D

Now, heading to the north side, where is like the "last stop" for gas?

Depends where you go in. I filled up in St. George, Utah.

What program do you use for your timelapse? What settings? I want to make one this weekend when I do the Mojave rd, but for 2 full days of driving, is 10 second intervals to short? And is 15 frames per second playback acceptable?

I used a GoPro shooting every 60 seconds. I used Windows Movie Maker to make all the images last like .1 or .2 seconds. I just made them last long enough so you could see each picture, but fast enough to constantly be showing a new picture.
Obviously, the shorter the interval between shots, the smoother it looks. I just used a long interval because I only have a 16gb microSD card, and didn't want to run out of space.

For the video, I just had Movie Maker speed it up to around 16x speed.

Nice, thanks for the info. I will give it a shot this weekend on my trip, see how it turns out.
