lesson learned
« on: May 11, 2013, 05:04:24 PM »
just about rolled my dodge trying to climb a hill that was obviously a little out of my league, and of course I broke a major rule of wheeling, tried it while I was by myself.  I do not have pics as I was unable to open my doors due to angle and vehicle rocking.  I took the power lines from new river road to table mesa on the west side.  headed up the trail "crap shoot" the back way and when I got to the steepest part of the trail I could not get the old girl up. she got loose on the big gravel and I slid back of the step and sideways between the trail, basically teetering between two and three wheels.  After I thought I blew my diff and realized it had stalled, I gathered my self, checked my drawers and started to ease it back and forth until the rear bumbper cleared the rocks and I slid down to the flat...chunked up the mt's pretty bad and put some dings in her but all in all, lucky as sh@#T!!  Hooray, isn't wheeling grand..

Hmm, JD, no bueno. When I head out by myself or with my kids I call it exploring instead of wheeling because to me wheeling is testing myself and rig but exploring is just getting out in the desert cruising around having fun but with no testing myself or rig. Sounds like you need to do more exploring when you head out alone and less wheeling.

On a side note, glad your ok and dont have to call your insurance company tomorrow. ;D

your right sunny, I am very reserved when I am by myself but I had a hair up my butt to connect the dots on that trail crap shoot.  I had gone to the top of that steep side from the table mesa side many a time, just never down it.  I figured, I do not want to go down and not get to a point where I could not get back up.  so logic said try it backwards, you will find out how the last 1/3 of the trail is and see if you can go up...well I learned.  even if my truck was locked in the rear it would have been tough. I will take pics of the hill next time I am out their.  I do know better and never would I attempt that with my kids in the car unless I have tried it first.

That sounds like it was legitimately scary. Glad you're alright after that!
