Replacing OEM steering wheel
« on: October 21, 2013, 01:47:10 PM »
Anybody have any Idea how to change it out. I just bought a new one because mine is a bit beat up. Any help would be great.

Dude that's easy.
Park vehicle with wheels straightened out.
Disconnect the battery so you don't set off the air bag.
Should be a small hole on the backside of the of the wheel behind the air bag. The air bag needs to come out. Insert a blunt tool into the hole  releasing the retainjng clip that holds the air bag.
Once the retaining clip is released the air bag will lift out.
Disconnect the air bag wires and horn wires and set aside facing up.
Should be large nut holding steering wheel on. Pull the nut. Pull the wheel and install new wheel.

thanks Kyle, I just don't want to be on the 5 o'clock news man decapitated in garage by air bag. Do you need a wheel puller? Maybe i'll save this for the mod day. I hate messing with air bags

Disconnect the battery and wait at least 3 min. You have nothing to worry about. I don't think you need a puller. The air bag should take no longer than 5-10 to pull out.  The wheel another 5 min. Total job shouldn't take more than 30 min.

They are all the same. Especially when you work on a lot of air bag systems. Just make sure the battery is disconnected and you wait at least 3 min before you pull the air bag.

Same Xterra wheel, just switching or did you get the apathy wheel with lighted controls? By the way, would they be compatible? Need extra power for the illuminated control buttons???
