New Gal from Avondale
« on: March 13, 2014, 10:47:51 AM »
Hello!  I had a 2004 xterra, but the ex got it in the divorce :-(    Currently shopping for a new one.  Any suggestions on what years/models I should stay away from?   Thanks! :-)

Welcome! Another west sider woo hoo.

It really has to do with your budget. What can you afford and what do you want to or plan to do to it. I vote newer 2nd gen.

Yea tbh if they weren't wanting to charge me $400+ a month for a newer Xterra, I'd have purchased a newer one by now.  But I don't care to spend that much monthly on a vehicle of ANY kind.

I've heard the 06's have problems with the radiator/transmissions, but then again, I'm sure there are plenty of '06 owners out there who haven't, but from what I've read, a lot have had problems.

I guess it really depends on what you want to do in the Xterra, would be my question.  If you want a Xterra to go off roading, I think 1st gens are great.  I've never had a problem with my '01 on any trail and they're smaller than the newer ones so imo, that'll definitely help out if you're going on confined trails.

But then again, who doesn't like more space in their truck, along with all the fancy gadgets that some come with.  Also, (not always) buying an older xterra might mean it has a lot more miles on it (mine had 170,000 on it, but the owner took great care of it) and that might possibly mean there might be more problems, if the previous owner didn't take care of it, and there aren't any records of what has been done, and what it needs (I had to replace my transmission right after I bought it.  Around $1500 to replace with a new one, but that means another 180,000 miles I can put on it.  And some things here and there caused problems but were fixed, and for a while now, I haven't had to have anything fixed on my X so it has been great).

But like I said, I think it depends on what you want to do with your Xterra, and as PitSnipe said, it also depends greatly on your budget.  If I could find a first gen with VERY low miles, I'd take that over 2nd gens.  But it's almost impossible to find a first gen without being over 130,000 miles.

The problem with the early models 05-06 are well known and easily correctable.  A new radiator is about 150, and a new ipdm is about 150 as well.  All together they are less then 3 hours of install time, not bad if you consider those are the only known major issues with a mass production vehicle :)
