As September comes to a close I am currently at 955 finds.

Very cool to see a geocaching  thread since I was last here. PitSnipe, have you broken the 1K mark yet? It is addicting to say the least.

I had a geocaching thread going and after some time we decided that it needed its own topic thread.

I have not yet hit 1000 finds. I am currently at 961. The problem is I have found about 95% of them in Surprise ad haven't been getting out as much as I used to.

So I got off work early today and decided to do some geocaching. Went to an area near Grand Ave and Happy Valley rd near Wittmann. After giving up on the first one I decided to play for a little. Well that ended up getting me stuck. I high centered myself. After nearly and hour and a half I dug myself out. Good thing I have a shovel. My machete also proved to be a great tool.

Nice self recovery, the shovel is king off-road!

Nice save.

I ran a few searches last night looking around Tucson. There's a couple that are hikeable from my apt in the Tucson mountains. I have one more botany lab tomorrow (sat) morning and I'm free for the semester. Might try and tackle a few of those once I'm done.

Also checked on some caches along routes driving up into Utah and over into Cali. Thinking of a road trip for the holidays since I'm not going home this year. Might mix in some fossil hunting as well. We'll see how this all pan out.

Not sure if you've seen this web site but I started chasing more of the remote caches as they are ranked on LonelyCache.com. This site assigns points to geocaches based on difficulty and remoteness, with the assumption that fewer people are going to take the time to pursue remote caches. The higher the points on a cache means the less number of times its been visited, and in theory the more remote it is. The system only contains geocaches from the southwest (AZ, NM, west TX, southern CA, NV, UT, Sonora, etc.) but all geocaches in those areas are listed and ranked by the points system. Your caching username should also be on there, or maybe you have to set up an account, I can't remember, but its free and pulls the data directly over from geocaching. Its a pretty cool way to look at geocaches based on difficulty and remoteness.

My daughter and I made a hike to find one by us on South Mountain. It was a tiny one but the hike was nice.

In case you haven't heard, Governor Ducey just made geocaching allowable on State Trust Land. So for you STL permit holders this is a cool thing for trail running. Personally, as long as everyone is respectable, it means more geocaching in areas for us offroaders that are less traveled.

http://azgovernor.gov/governor/news/2016/02/governor-doug-ducey-announces-geocaching-now-allowed-state-trust-land

A memo issued Jan. 27 by Land Commissioner Lisa Atkins outlines new geocaching rules for state trust lands, saying:

— Geocachers will have to pay $15 for a recreation permit to go hunting for the small treasures on state land.

— Objects left behind on state land for geocaching cannot be bigger than a shoebox, hazardous or harmful, or considered high in value.

— The state isn't liable for reimbursing geocachers for lost items left behind.

— State officials can remove and destroy caches at any time.

— And they don't have to notify geocachers when land goes up for lease or sale.

Excellent. I had a couple friends lose hundreds each when the state trust went through the GIS layers and forced geocaching to archive all caches placed on trust lands. This should ultimately bring thousands of caches back into play once everyone gets their hides reset and relisted.

Kinda unplugged from FB and most all social networking aside from IG. But I'll definitely go check this out sometime soon. Thanks for the heads up.

Went and found two caches the other day, one was a two parter and the second part was a hike up part of South Mountain. The family decided to forgo that one that day due to the heat.

The second cache was a micro, so log only but it was a fun and interesting one to 'find'.  If you are in the Tukee area, check out, "The JOYZ of anagrams"

Busy with way too much stuff lately.... glancing at my GC profile today I realized I hadn't even grabbed one cache yet this year. :-\ Think I need to remedy that very soon.

BTW, I never introduced my geocaching-self on here. I go by Broken Trowel on GC. I was working in Ajo as an archaeologist when I started caching so the name references the main tool of the trade for my work back then. ;D

Kinda lost touch with geocaching. I really need to get out more. Too bad its so hot out now though. I went out last Saturday and bagged three north of the White Tanks. It felt really good to find a couple after its been a few months. I am getting so close to hitting 1000 finds.
