Rear axle making loud grinding noise
« on: December 17, 2014, 09:35:54 AM »
This is just for informational purposes:

On my 07 Xterra OR I was climbing a steep grade at sycamore creek and while in 4Lo with rear end locked in out of no where I heard a loud grinding noise and I stopped moving. Put it in neutral rolled down and found out it was coming from rear end. Disconnected rear drive shaft and used a latex glove and zip tie over the output shaft on the transfer case and drive out in 4HI. I had the 100,00mile warranty and was at 99,832 by the time I got out. One problem was once on pavement looked at the transfer case and because it is right by the exhaust the glove melted and leaked out a lot of the transfer case fluid. I had my brother tow me to the dealership and I was then at 99,840miles. The warranty company wanted a receipt of some sort on when I got the differential serviced. I did it myself at 60,000miles like the manual says and did t have any receipts. My brother owns his own shop and created a work order for me with prices off google and a work order number and they bought it. Everything was covered. Only paid 100 bucks for the diagnostic fee. Total price on the work order was $3900 but that's also because they replaced motor mounts as well. Hopefully this will help someone in the future.
Prepare for the worst; Hope for the best.

So what all exactly had to be done?

Glad you got out of there not paying much and you were safe.
