1st Gen Steering Gear Box
« on: January 07, 2016, 09:25:19 AM »
This isn't quite the DYI just yet, but it will be once I'm done fixing it.

I have two options, order the part from somewhere, least expensive is via RockAuto.com and they return the core charge but seems like such a pita.

Or find the gear box at a junkyard and rebuild it. Seems like I'd have to buy about 4 or so different kits to do that and might cost me as much as ordering it already rebuilt. Still trying to figure out what kits I need...

I did find a good write-up on rebuilding these things.

Here's a link to tightening the slop, to an extent. (Haven't tried this.)

Is that something AutoZone could order in and match the rockauto price?   I think someone said something about AutoZone doing that before.

It's still cheaper to order from RockAuto and they are sponsor. Autozone is not. Aside from that I did call AutoZone, they will match a similar part (they didn't say brand matching) but you have to include next day shipping which is another $38. I figure it's about $50 cheaper not including taxes.

I found out (the hard way) Gen1 steering gear box' are prone to leaks caused by pressure from leaving the wheels turned while parked, and the engine running. Pressure builds internally and poof!

I just gotta figure out what rebuild parts I would need to find out that route. Looks like I would need these maybe:

Steering Gear Input Shaft Seal
Steering Gear Pitman Shaft Seal
Steering Gear Seal Kit

So, after looking at the labor involved, I decided I'm going to order it from RockAuto.

I know the older Altima and Sentra models were plagued with power steering issues, and my X is leaking PS fluid now..
