Kyle,

it is a global satellite communicator. It can send texts and tracks your position. Sends your lat/long position as well. Particularly useful if you are out of cell reach. I believe at lot of back country hikers/back packers use them. Great for emergencies.

I just wanted feed back from people that have used them.

Im not aware of any serious hikers or backpackers that use this device. Its basically DeLormes version of the SPOT device. The problem I have with both of these companies is that they are not built to any standards like a real PLB. A real PLB is a life saving device that requires NCOAA registration. The Delorme and SPOT also do not transmit any 406mhz frequency which is the SAR standard. The only major benefit I see that the SPOT or Delorme device is that they have a bread crumb feature to let a third party see your last location or transmission.

I had a SPOT device for years when they first came out and it was sketchy at best. Especially in canyon areas like we have in AZ. It worked great on top of ridges or in flat areas but other than that the signal sucked. Look at the antenna on an ACR or similar device its a huge fold out antenna not some anemic bump like most of the private SAR devices offer.

SPOT and Delorme have great marketing but any serious explorer will have serious gear. I suppose you have to look at what is your intent with the device? Something is always better than nothing.

A Ham radio would probably be more useful they can be used in an emergency without a license. You could give much better information to the SAR team e.g. need insulin, broken leg, heart attack, heat stroke  and they can triangulate your position.

Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads.

I've looked into PLBs, they are well built highly regulated devices.  I dive so I had considered one for that was well as wheeling.  I got into HAM as a low cost way to communicate out in the middle of nowhere, but even that wont get out of a deep canyon.  I'll be curious to see which way you decide to go.

I have spoken to a few overlanders and they swear by it (InReach). They also have both CB and Ham.

I'll keep search other forums. Thanks for the input.
