Harquahala Mountain 4x4 Trip 3-7-16 (small review)
« on: March 10, 2016, 05:14:15 PM »
My dad was in town and was looking for something to do.  He asked me if there was a new area I wanted to Xplore.  The Harquahala Mountains came to mind. This area has been on my list for a couple of years.
The main road to the top is in good condition, its just steep in some areas.  I used 4-low once to get up an incline.  A stock 2WD truck might struggle. After making it to the Old Smithsonian building, we drove around on all the available roads at the top.  The trails at the top are not maintained.   Nothing much to see on these trails but a few mining ruins.   After a couple hours at the top we headed down to check out some other mines in the area..

There is plenty of parking at the top and a few campsites along the way.  This could be a future group trip.

GPS route at the top.

The destination

Old Smithsonian building in the background.  Used 1920-1925

Playing around near one of the mines

County Line, up at the top

Mining ruins

Other mines in the area

Looks like fun, I'm having trouble finding your route on google maps.  Does Hidden Treasure Mine rd go through?,+Arizona+85357/@33.7627796,-113.4041324,12.75z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x80d3779786f00edd:0xf9d6ab54e142389

Google maps wont help you on this trail.. My dad tried and it didnt work.
You dont use Hidden Treasure Mine Rd.  You take Eagle Eye Rd  around 8.25 miles. Then you take the Harquahala Biway to the top.
Here is the GPS route I recorded. (I will leave it up on this site for a little while)   You can also google search for more information.

Excellent trip report. I missed out on a run in this area a few years ago but I hear there is a lot to see. I would be up for a group trip. Nice pics TOTM contender!
Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads.
