New Xterra owner in Apache Junction
« on: June 30, 2016, 09:04:28 PM »
Hi, I'm Wayne and I'm in the Apache Junction area.

Started looking for an Xterra in May.  I had planned on picking up a 1st generation as sort of a semi-beater to take out on desert excursions, camping/fishing trips, etc.  I didn’t realize how tough it would be to find one with 4wd and a manual.  I knew that the 2nd generation was a huge leap forward, but figured a decent one would be out of my price range.  A couple of weeks ago on a whim I checked Carmax in Gilbert and found a 2008 Off Road, 6-speed, in Solar Yellow with less than 37k miles, and the price was right.  Loving the rig as a daily driver.  I’m already appreciating the utility of an SUV, I love the torque of the VQ40, and I’ve missed driving a manual.  No mods planned currently, mostly because it pretty much does what I need it to do in stock form.  I am going to add some sliders, as the stock “nerf bars” hang down too low for my taste, and I may step up a tire size when it’s time for new shoes.  For now, all I’ve done are some small cosmetic/convenience niceties:  Hood protector/wind deflectors, new rear cargo floor panel (the existing one was slightly bent and scratched), Utilitrack hooks (they were missing), the chrome “Off Road” lettering on the doors (also missing), and Weathertech floor liners.  I disliked the cheap-looking shift knob and boot, so I added a leather shift boot, e-brake boot, and center armrest (with neato yellow stitching to match the exterior) and topped it off with a 370Z shift knob.  Sort of corny, I guess, but it looks pretty factory and tasteful.

Look forward to meeting some of you and learning more about my Xterra.  My last Nissan was my college car, a ’91 B13 Sentra SE-R that I loved and owned for 12 years and ~212k miles.  I took good care of that car, and it took good care of me (even though I beat the hell out of it from time to time  ;)
