Xterra idler arm from calmini
« on: July 28, 2016, 01:46:40 PM »
Is there anyone that is familiar with calmini steering system for 2001-04 Xterra? I hit some trails this past weekend and my idler arm was so loose. I think it needs a new bushing. And calmini sells just the idler arm for $350 not just bushings. I have to keep tightening the bolt under the idler arm so the front doesn't shake. But by doing that it creates a loud screech  while turning and it's more stiff. Not sure on what to do so hopefully someone can help me out. Thank you.

If it's loose at the bushing, replace the bushing. How is the rest of the steering?

The steering is fine. And the company doesn't sell the bushing. So I have to find somewhere that has or can make one. I won't know  what kind untill I take it off but can't do that since It is a daily driver.

I've read some bad reviews regarding the issue you are having. Bushings don't last long. I'm sure you've done this but have you tried calling Calmini?

I have but they said that they do not sell the bushings. They only sell a replacement idler arm. Which is $350. Just the dang arm. And the whole kit was $600 plus tax and shipping. It's just silly. So I'm hoping I can find somewhere that might have bushings I can use.

Are they willing to tell you what kind of bushing you need? If so a simple search on mcmaster will get you the part much cheaper. If not, try contacting Greg over at PRG if anyone knows what you need exactly it's him even when not his products.

This is from a post on N4W from a while back describing how to replace the bushing with spherical bearings.  It makes a big difference and lasts longer.  Hand drawn attachment is Reserector's shop drawing of how it goes.  Second attachment is off XOC from way back in the day.  I have one of modified these idler arms that I'm not using anymore along with the rest of the Calmini steering kit.  The one I have probably needs new bearings but the machining is done. $150 for the whole kit from  tie rod to tie rod.

When I priced the work locally it came to about $300.

A few notes:
McMaster-Carr bearing part number is 2699K13

The bearings are a tight press fit into the arm. It is a light press fit onto the bearing separator.

The bearing from McMaster-Carr has seals on both sides. This is the one you want. The part number is on my drawing.

Be sure to remove the inner seal on both bearings so that grease can channel through them from the centered lube fitting.
