My gun is not a cheap inexpensive first gun, but I will only buy Sig Sauer.  The Army just switched to a P320.  It is a striker fire polymer 9mm.  The ballistics of a 9mm vs ALL others are better.  I used to carry a .45ACP Sig 1911 Ultra, but now carry a P938 9mm.  Much lighter very accurate and easy to handle.  As far as inexpensive, like the others say, go fire a Glock 19, 23, or 43.  The gun MUST fit you and your hand.  Check Armslist for some good used and sometimes new sidearms.  Good luck in you search.
