  • PitSnipe (Kyle): Wow, I have not heard of this issue. 15 hour job for a $50 part is nuts. Hopefully someone that knows of this issue will speak up.

  • downs44: Got an 06 that just went through SMOD. Got everything replaced. Now my low oil pressure light is flickering on after the engine warms up and the truck is at idle. Doing some digging on the forums it looks like a common problem is the rear timing cover gallery gasket leaking and causes the symptoms. Looks like a 15 hour or so repair for a $50 part. Was wondering if anyone else has had this issue and any words of advise. To save some dialogue, the oil pressure sensor is about a year old and I changed the oil and filter after i noticed the light and that did not fix the issue.

Ok, so for the 2wds that want to still attend the camping, but would also like to wheel on an easier trail. I would be more than happy to lead an easy trail that is near there. The trail I'm looking at is Montana Mountain, its about 30 miles for a 4 hour trip. Pax and I will be taking that while the 4x4s go on their trail, if anyone would like to go. :)

With the week off I did a mini pre-run overnight expedition to check out some other trails in the area and the Oak Flats Camp Ground.

Telegraph Canyon Trail:
Its a stocker 4x4 friendly trip and awesome. Its one of my favorite trails in the area, last time I ran it I was 17 or 18 in my 88' Pathfinder. It was still awesome and even better maintained and signed with carsonites now. The danger wash out spot has been fixed. It goes behind the Apache Leap and the Boyce Thompson Arboretum. It has high canyon cliffs, with multiple creek crossings. It terminates where AJAX trail starts.

Oak Flats Camp Ground:
It looks a lot more desolate than I remember most of the large an small trees have been cut down around the camp spots by moron campers. A Native American tribe is having some sort of sit in with a semi permanent wiki-up, and the frames for several more were in place near the entrance. Still some nicely shaded spots by the creek, with benches and out houses nearby.

I spoke to one of the sit-in representatives briefly and it seems like they will be there a long time. They are basically rotating in and out. Right when I pulled up a van with several backpackers pulled in. I made it brief because he smelled of heavy alcohol, and was basically hanging in my car window.

I decided to drive up devils Canyon Trail to scout it out, I found a secluded open area near a small creek possibly 2WD accessible. The only bad part was I could hear the highway all night. Even that far in I could hear some humming sound from the mining activity nearby. It also got really cold at night so I had to break out the super shelter, it was about 70 degrees inside probably low 40's or high 30's outside.

Montana Mountain Trail:
This trail is awesomely long, it reminded me a lot of the Bloody Basin trail. At the very top it was covered by juniper trees. It looked like I was in Sedona in some places with the amount of red rock. Really nice scenic drive with creek and river bed crossings. I plan to return for some day hiking and a overnight soon.

Awesome chuy, looks great. I do plan to take that trail while the 4x4 have some fun, so I could lead it, or someone else, it doesn't matter to me. And we might have another Xterra joining us for this.

This is just around the corner, everyone going chime in so we can kick around some ideas?

Do you guys want to try and secure a large group camp area at Oak Flats or one of the dispersed areas?

Who's heading up Friday and whats your ETA?
Who's heading up Saturday morning?
Who's bringing wood and how much?
Who's down for group carne asada tacos Saturday after the run/potluck sides? (Is this event AZXC sponsored?)

Eron, whats the trail plan the hard route or the harder one? If we do the full loop from the gate to Oak Flats do you think about ~5 hours.

Does anyone plan to hang back at the campsite, that is a busy area. It could be all filled up when we return.

I can bring:

-camp stove
-kitchen gear
-12x12 canopy
-community water
-wood 4-6 bags

I can help cook, Im no chef so expect well done. If we have time for breakfast before the run we can do a big group breakfast?

I'll be staying Friday night. I think the dispersed area would be better. I can be there around 5pm. I texted Thumpertrooper but he he never replied :(

I can bring a few bundles of wood for Friday night.

I'm thinking 9am to start the hard trail. And we will be starting from the mining area.

I love the dispersed camp idea, but the only issue I saw with that was no cell phone reception (Verizon). I did have good signal at the main lower Oak Flats area. I think for communication and easy meet spot up for the last minute people or late night people coming from far away. It might be easier for them to spot us out at the main camp ground (its a small loop). I can probably swing  being there Thursday evening, to try and get us a good group spot.

The Mine start area is just right up the road. We could have people meet us at the Oak Flats camp site, then head out to the trail head Saturday morning.
