Well, I've spent about 6 months acquiring everything necessary to swap my rear end out from a C200 in 3.13 gearing to an M226 in 3.36 gearing with an e-locker. I contemplated a Titan swap at the same time with an M205 in 3.36 to match the rear end, but I acquired a 3.36-geared R180 locally for a great deal and decided I'd save the T-swap for another day.

Anyway, this weekend was the big project, and it went very smoothly. I spent all day Friday removing the rear C200 axle and old leaf springs, plus installing the new leaf springs and M226 rear axle. I went with OME Med. Duty leafs and a u-bolt flip kit from PRG, and I already regret not getting the Heavy Duty AAL. I roll with a little bit of extra weight in my rig, and even though it sits and rides nicely now, I can tell it's going to sag pretty badly when I load it up for a camping trip. So, I'll be ordering the HD AAL and installing it at some point.

I took it easy on Saturday because I was pretty sore and tired from swapping the whole axle by myself the day before. I spent a few hours filling the M226 with fluid, connecting/installing the ABS sensors, running a new hose for my diff breather mod (the old one was too big for the new nipple, plus it was a bit worn out), bleeding the brakes, and wiring up the e-locker. I tapped into the factory "Diff Lock" light in the instrument cluster and ran it to the negative signal from the e-locker, and I'm glad I did. I like the dash light as a positive notification of mechanical engagement of the locker.

Sunday, I spent the afternoon swapping out the R180 with the help of Knightrider, another local Xterra owner. It went very smoothly, and the project is complete. I'm already loving the slightly lower gear ratio. I know it's only like a 7% change, but it made a very pleasant difference. I guess I'm supposed to notice it more on the low end, but it's VERY NICE to be able to drive at highway speeds again and not be constantly hunting between 4th and 5th gear.

Here are some photos from the project:

M226 axle prepped for install. I gave it a good bath in foaming degreaser, removed the outer abs sensor wire tabs (for the u-bolt flip kit), hit a few spots with some black spray paint to prevent rust, removed the diff cover and inspected the gears, painted and re-installed the diff cover, installed the new breather tube nipple, and swapped most of the brake parts over from the C200 that was on the rig (i just kept one side of the e-brake intact, everything else moved over from my C200):

Haha thanks guys, and if it makes you feel better, it WAS NOT easy. I still feel like I got ran over by a dump truck or something. Climbing under and back out from under the rig like 100 times three days in a row is BRUTAL. I tried to muster up some help but there just wasn't a date that worked for anyone locally here, and my wife was getting tired of tripping over the rear axle, front diff, leaf springs and big tub o' parts in the garage. All in all, I'd say it took me about 50 hours to get this project done, mostly by myself. That includes some time spent before this weekend, too (doing things like picking up fluids and some tools locally, picking up the rear axle, etc). This weekend specifically, I probably spent about 30 hours on it.
