Hassayampa Rver @ Box Canyon
« on: April 27, 2017, 04:35:48 AM »
A friend of mine invited me out to do the Box Canyon run...
The same friend decided to stop in a horrible place down the river, and like an idiot I stopped right next to him.  We both sank in the sand!!  We where stuck!! At one point, my sliders where buried in sand.
Damage Report:  I finished off my factory oil pan skid plate.  Its toast.

Great pics. Ive been wanting to run this for a few years now. Hows the difficulty and how long does it take?

lol, there's no difficulty. it's a sand wash you can boonywhomp at speeds over 50 mph, and then it enters the slot where the Hassayampa runs below the surface most of the year, only trickling up and out a couple times of year. It's notorious for the "quicksand" spots too when lots of run off cause the sand top become unstable. I've sunk my GEN1 (in what looks to be the same spot) up to the sliders also.. Good times. There's a turnoff to the left w/ shade trees hiding a small box canyon at the rear. Follow the wash to the end, there's another spot the water comes up (ankle deep) and it's nice to chill there or drive past into an open area to do a couple little hill climbs. About midway along the wash, to the right, is the way up to the "mistake mine"; a steep, shale covered switchback up to an abandoned "mine". Not really a mine, but the beginning of one. Goes in maybe 20 feet to the left, and 30 yards to the right. The ammonia from bat guano is noxious, and the floor is crawling w/ weird spiders, worms, and other stuff.. Not a pleasant place to stay. You can turn around there (trucks) one at a time and roll down. We used to follow the trail up and along the ridgeline and pop out at (can't remember) Hill Top trail or Blue Ridge drive (something like that, you pass it on the way in..) but they'd begun construction of something back and up there years ago. I'd guess it's impassable now, or you'd at least be on someone's property.
How long depends on how long you want to stay there.. Just running from one end of the wash to the other takes only 10-15 minutes. It's all the little tool-around places and shady spots to stop in that consume more time. The climb up to the mine, may take another 20 minutes or more depending on how choppy the trail is these days, and if one cared to follow the trail up and around to wherever it goes these days, it used to add on another 2-3 hours to the end.
Thanks for sharing the pics, It's a great spot, one of if not the first I'd been to w/ AZXC when I joined 2001.  8)

Dbax is correct. The only thing to worry about on the main trail is the sand.  There are a lot of other trails in the area you can add.  We drove down a couple of them for a short distance.

This is the GPS route we took.  Im sure there are other entering and leaving options to the river.
