Perception Help
« on: July 27, 2009, 09:22:23 PM »
I'd like to bridge the perception gap that can exist between a group of moutain bikers and a group of off-roaders.  Our involvment in the Toys for Tots every year does a lot to build that bridge.

This year I thought we might go a bit farther.  I'd like to have a synopsis of what the club does to provide a positive environmental impact.  For instance the cleanup at Four Peaks this year, anyone who participated in the Table Mesa cleanup and any other activities.

I'll print it on an 8.5 x 11 sheet with pictures on the back.  There is a stuffing party this Sunday for the rider packets and if I can have them done, The Dirty Girls will stuff them in the rider packets.

I need some help...

Info from the most recent cleanups

Events the Xterra Club participates in  ie ASU, Triathalon

Pics from any cleanups.  Random ones (Coves last year who was that) and big organized ones.

Email me anything you can to stone@orbitelcom.com

Anything else I can use...

Thanks,

Marshall

We've done the 4 peaks cleanup 2 years in a row now, and we've also done 2 cleanups at Table Mesa.  The pics were posted on XOC, but I'm sure most of that stuff is missing now.

Personally, I volunteer with the OHV Ambassadors organization which helps educate the public on proper Off-roading principles, etiquette, rules, etc.  They are also involved in trail cleanups, trail maintenance, and trail patrols (helping people in need).

Additionally, I am a current member of Tread Lightly!, and I am sure that there are others from either AZXC, SWANKy, and ONAZ that are members of Tread Lightly! as well.

Great idea Stone. I will call Tim Huber (organized the major 4-peaks clean ups) and get him involved too.

Between all of us, we oughta be able to put together a good collage of pictures and information. I like how you're thinking.

Whoever has pics on their computer or photbucket - get them to the email address provided above ASAP. Thanks.

What would be cool was the numbers on the Four Peaks cleanup as far as how many tons of trash etc etc.

From this year's 4 peaks cleanup, the numbers I had heard were 500+ people and 20+ tons of trash.

EDIT:  Tim Huber (SOAZ on Expedition Portal) is the guy that runs the 4 Peaks cleanup.  He would have detailed info / pictures.

Here is some info / pictures from our last Table Mesa cleanup in November of 2008:

I believe there were 100+ people out there and we filled two rolloff dumpsters and had a third one half-way full.

EDIT:  The pictures in the thread above are from the two areas that we (ONAZ/AZXC and Higher Ground) helped clean.  There were many more groups out there that cleaned up a bunch of spots.

Done deal.  Made a nice flyer with pics on the back to stuff in the rider packs...

Here is the type side...

Meet the Xterra and SWANKy Clubs
The Xterra and SWANKy (Southwest Area Nissan Club) clubs were both started almost ten years ago by likeminded people who enjoy the desert and national forests of Arizona.    Both groups maintain members who contribute to Tread Lightly and many other organizations like the BLM and OHV Ambassadors Program that co-exist in an effort to positively impact our public lands.

Some things you may not know about these groups is that they work with the National Forest on trail repairs and trail/forest cleanups among other projects.  Just recently both groups assisted in a cleanup in the Four Peaks area where OVER 20 TONS of trash was removed.  Earlier this year there was a similar cleanup in the Table Mesa area.  There were also bi-yearly cleanups by the Xterra Club in the Indian Springs area until the area was closed from a major fire.  The Xterra Club also assisted in the reseeding project for the Rodeo-Chediski fire, the Xtreme Triathlon as support and we both have assisted the Toys for Tots ride for the last seven years.

It is fairly common for members of our clubs to come across a camp that has trash left in it or a fire that is not out and we always fill our trash bags and maintain these campsites to the condition they should be in.  You can see a before and after picture on the back of this flyer of a campsite in the coves area of Saguaro Lake that some of our members found and cleaned.

It is our pleasure to assist you during the Toys for Tots Ride and we hope we make you feel safer out there each year as you go above and beyond in an effort to help a very worthy cause, we commend you all.

We will be camped at the far East end of End Camp this year feel free to stop by and say “Hi”

Cool, you just forgot to tell them to bring a keg for our group. J/K

It's always a balance between interests and I'm proud that we as a group continue to help bridge those issues.

Thank you for your Dedication and to everyone else for being a part of something that is truly bigger than any one of us.
