  • jcm45: Hi everyone, I just joined up here and am looking for some advice. Anyone have a shop they recommend for their Xterra? I just purchased an 02 and discovered the seller managed to cover up a thrown rod so likely need a new engine. I've called a few shops and most seem to not be overly familiar with them. I don't want someone inexperienced potentially doing something wrong or milking the labor. Can anyone recommend a shop that's had this done before?

Ok, read the write ups.  How many days does this take?  How much will it cost to pay someone to do it?

From what Iíve heard itís pretty expensive to do through a shop. But I think it could be done in a weekend with extra hands

From what I have heard on the 2nd Gen Xterra forums is it will cost around $1,700 to do the timing chain replacement.  I bought a kit on Amazon from the Nissan dealer in Surprise (just by coincidence) for under $100 with genuine Nissan parts.  I have not installed it yet because I do not have the flywheel lock tool.  I have heard of others using a large screwdriver to secure the motor in place, but that kind of scares me while cracking down on the cam gear bolts that it will slip out of time.  Here is a link on 2nd Gen for the replacement.  It is the best one I have found so far.  I do for sure need to do mine.  I'm a one man show and it will take a long time.
